This was a long read, but I actually enjoyed it. I think it's one of those that creeps up on you, compelling but frustrating all at the same time. The writing is superb, the imagery just pulls you into the scenes and the characters are worthy of all the lengthy descriptions here, and are alive as much as they can be.

I had difficulty getting into it, and because there were a few plots that tied together some difficulty following what was happening at times, but that is all on me, not the writer. I didn't see it coming, never guessed who the antagonist was or what the end would bring.

Halfway through, I thought that I'd never read anymore in this series. John Connolly just proved me wrong.

Charlie Parker makes a damaged yet capable anti hero, the twists keep coming and Connolly reminds me again and again what an excellent and enticing writer he is.

Just not in the mood for conventionally grim and gruesome.

This book should’ve been 2. The first half is in no way related to the description of the book. And it’s so interconnected that it comes across as too unbelievable. The second half is related to what the description is but left me feeling unsatisfied.

I do have to admit to not fully reading the book, I would skim several chapters. He would frequently go on seemly unrelated stories about something related to his wife, but added nothing to the story.

A huge thank you to my friend Helen Thorn for recommending this book to me! I'm so happy to have discovered a new to me crime/mystery/thriller writer - and one who writes really, really well. This was a crime novel in four parts. We meet NYPD Detective Charlie "Bird" Parker, who has just had his wife and daughter killed in a horrific manner. He is asked by his boss to help a woman locate her missing friend. That is the first step in a story involving him hunting down several serial killers. Really great book and I'll definitely be reading more by John Connolly.

Every Dead Thing is really two novels stuck together by the mere fact that the lead character, Charlie Parker (former cop, now private investigator) is heavily involved in both plots. While Charlie Parker’s back story (one of immense and tragic personal loss) drives him, the gruesome descriptions of murder, torture and death were too much for me. That along with almost incessant shoot outs leading to an unbelievable body count left me wishing I hadn’t started reading the book in the first place.

Let's just get things out of the way early here: This is a very DARK book. It follows the journey of former cop Charlie Parker (or "Bird") as he seeks the killer of his wife and child, and it goes into some VERY nasty places. (That's not really a spoiler, since it happens in the first few pages.)

With that said, it's a very good book. Connolly has a way with words, and his writing really pulled me into Parker's world. There are many interesting characters, and some plot twists I didn't see coming.

My only real complaint with the book is that I called one of the major plot points quite early in the book, which ruined a bit of the "fun" when it happened.

I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in the series.

(By the way, I met the author at ONCE UPON A CRIME in Minneapolis, MN, and he was a very friendly and funny guy! If you get the chance to meet him, you should definitely do it.)
