i liked this way way more than i thought i was going to. the second half is a little weaker than the first, but still it doesn’t totally fizzle when the story moves into the present like i thought it might.

it actually works out that the paperback is so ugly because it’s what made me finally buy the hardcover and renewed my interest in checking this out

I was kind of annoyed by the book and didn't understand why the painting and the secret was such a big deal. I think it intended to be more moving than it actually was for me, and so maybe I was annoyed at the "try hard nature". I do think it captured realistic aspects of the adolescent mind (though, while believable, also gave an extra annoying twinge).
I didn't dislike the book though, despite not having much positive to say about it.

It’s been a minute since I powered through a book in a day! Second book by this author; his stuff is the perfect balance of easily readable and also well-written.

3.8/ Frankie Budge is a great character and Wilson does a nice job bringing her to life -- especially through the narrative voice which carried the novel for me. Similarly, the world of Coalfield is drawn well and it rightfully feels like the sort of place that would drive teenagers to odd and erratic behavior.  I wanted a little more from the adult timeline but was ultimately satisfied with the ending. Reminded me a lot of A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews in the coming-of-age narrative voice.
