Meh. I didn't like the protagonist so it was hard to get into. I gave it about 30% before I decided I didn't have to put up with her anymore.
This was a fun, lighthearted read that made me laugh out loud numerous times. Though there are a few problematic plot points that don't translate well across time, they are more minor moments and not broad sweeping issues.
Holly is struggling to find her place in life, yet is okay with who she is. She accepts responsibility for why her life is the way it is while half-heartedly striving to change it. She's humorous and often gets herself into awkward situations. Her flatmates are equally hilarious, and navigating similar straits.
This book was a fun diversion and felt a bit like stepping back in time. Pagers! Answering machines! Few cell phones! It was an enjoyable read, but lacks the re-read-ability her other novels typically have. Nevertheless, it's a fun book with lower stakes for the most part and quite a few laughs.

I’m working on rereading older books from my bookshelves and this was bad. Fatphobic as hell. The main character is super unlikable. She refers to a character as “Dr. Hitler”, pretends to be the girlfriend of a coma patient, and is constantly and repeatedly fatphobic to her roommate’s long distance girlfriend. Rehoming this one for sure.
3.5 ⭐️ One of Jenny Colgan’s earlier books. I prefer her later books but this was a quick little read and that me laughing out loud at some parts.
It fulfils the “backlist of an author you like” for the Modern Mrs Darcy 2019 Reading Challenge.

I dnf'd this book at 41% due to the comparing people to monkeys and referring to a nerdy computer guy that avoids social interaction as "autistic" without any basis other than the generic characteristics.
It took a couple chapters to get into, but I ended up liking it. Very much the brit chick lit genre. The geek whatnot was a nice change. altogether a rather over-the-top book. then again, guess I can't say Bridget Jones is very subtle.
I'll start with saying Romance novels are not my first choice, but can appreciate the good ones. This one had a very thin plot and all the characters seemed exaggerated. A just ok read.

Not Jenny Colgan's typical heroine, too needy and scattered, and oblivious to other people and herself. I didn't care for how self-absorbed, stalker-ish she was, and could not get into the book. I have adored most of Jenny Colgan's heroines, I like how quirky, adorable, spirited, and independent they are. This reminded me of some of the mainstream romances I ran across and avoided. Not everything is everybody's cup of tea.
This was a fantastic read! I loved Holly for the fact that she was such a generally happy girl who wasn't overly ambitious (rather a slacker) and quite content to remain that way. I also love, love, loved Addison. A geeky Johnny Depp? What more does a girl need? It was a tad on the darkly humorous side which I also enjoyed very much. The last 1/8 of the book seemed a little chaotic but other than that I've no complaints.
