First of all, can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that I have found a YA novel that is a *standalone*? Isn’t such an amazing thing? *heart eyes*
Malice by Pintip Dunn is a science fiction story with a strong romantic foundation – and enough twists and turns to have me hooked right from the start of the book; and the interest didn’t let up until I actually finished the book.
Alice (Malice) is in high school with her home life in tatters – her mother abandoned her brother and her 6 years back and her father is merely a figure head; and one that has no actual interest in her life and is the epitome of an emotionally unavailable parent. In fact, her whole life revolves around her brother, Archie and her best friend Lalana and her strict rule to not date in high school.
When she experiences an anomaly – as much as being zapped by electricity and hearing the Voice of a woman claiming to be Alice of the future – can be considered an anomaly, puts her on the path of a gorgeous boy, Bandit and a journey that will test all her strength, her beliefs and faith in the very humanity!
This was my first book from Pintip Dunn and if you enjoy a dash of romance with your mystery and science fiction; then this is a book that you should not miss either! The writing style of the author reels you in with everything that she has so expertly weaved into the book and its plotline.
Within the pages of Malice, you will find a girl’s journey to understand how love and attention plays a significant role in a human being’s life and it will the love she has for her near and dear ones against the strong moral code – before the book ends, our protagonist will travel further than she had ever dreamed, find her illusions shattered and yet find strength in hope, against all odds!

I loved this one. Which if you know me you know that I simply cannot for whatever reason wrap my mind around time travel but this one made sense!! Think of this book as a dystopian sci-fi. At first I wasn’t sure about it, but once I got 3 chapters in I could not put this down. I neglected homework for this book! I can’t even really talk about the plot because everything I have to say is a spoiler. The characters are great and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the beginning didn’t make sense at first. I know there is a writing technique that means you start in the middle of things. (The Latin term escapes me right now.) Things get going right in the first chapter. You will not regret reading this book.
I finished this a little late but I really enjoyed reading this with the Dragons and Tea Book Club! Full RTC!
CW: Graphic descriptions of a virus and it’s effects on the human body, violence, mentions of substances

I loved this book sooo much. I have been in a book slump lately and this book keep me so intrigued.
adventurous
medium-paced
The book was very captivating and fast-paced. The MC's decisions are pretty stupid at times, and I wonder why she didn't do certain things when they were so obvious. The virus maker though, had me guessing for a while. My number one candidate and number two candidate were wrong, but the actual culprit made sense. It added a lot more essence to the story.
Wow what a great first book by this author! This wasn’t her debut novel but it was my first book that I read and I really enjoyed it!
Thanks to the dragons and tea book club for picking this as their buddy read this month!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

OVERALL RATING: 5/5 stars! Malice is a captivating web of a book. I am so grateful that I received a review copy of this book, and I am so excited that it's in the world!
PLOT: 4.5/5 stars. There were a few confusing bits, but overall the plot was intriguing and suspenseful. The twists were twisty enough that they weren't obvious, but not pulled out of thin air. I was able to guess some of them, but I was never too confident in my guesses!
STRUCTURE: 5/5 stars. The order of things made sense, and the storyline was strong. The character dispirited it well.
WORLD-BUILDING: 5/5 stars. From the first few pages I was pulled into the world of Alice and the rest of the cast. I could feel everything that was happening.
THEME: 5/5 stars. Dunn's concept was so unique! I've never read another book like it.
CHARACTERS: 5/5 stars. I found Alice so relatable, and I enjoyed getting to know Bandit. My feelings about him changed in conjunction with Alice's (almost).
DIALOGUE: 5/5 stars. Bandit's sarcastic remarks and Zeke's kind words were both so realistic. Alice's flustered responses were too
