Wow am I glad I grabbed this book at the airport because of how pretty the cover was. I was gripped to the book throughout the whole flight. So rare is it so have a book which follows family drama and love triangles with stunning prose, believable characterisation and perfect pacing.
What a perfect success for an homage to Little Women.
The book is without judgement for the difficult choices characters have to make. Everyone is trying to survive and grow the only way they know how and if for Sylvia that means through loving her sister's ex-husband then that simply is her only way, if for William that is to 'save' his child through keeping her from his depression then that just is the way. All characters are so deeply and vulnerably human and I found myself loving all of them, mourning for all their losses.
My favourite part of the book, however, has to be the characterisation of William. Despite how seemingly unexpected and unfair his decision to walk out on Julia was I felt such a strong wave of sympathy and love for him - a boy who was raised to believe that "it should have been me" and not his sister who died. A boy raised to believe that all he does is harm those around him and who has learnt that his own needs come second. A boy who ultimately felt he had no choice but to take his life to escape the guilt and fear of hurting those close to him. And finally a boy who finally allows himself to open up again to Sylvie and Kent and promises that there is always the possibility of letting people in. Here are a few of my favourite quotes (but let it be said the repeated references to Little Women and Beth also were my favourite moments):
---> "When an old person dies,” Kent said, “even if that person is wonderful, he or she is still somewhat ready, and so are the people who loved them. They’re like old trees, whose roots have loosened in the ground. They fall gently. But when someone like your aunt Sylvie dies—before her time—her roots get pulled out and the ground is ripped up. Everyone nearby is in danger of being knocked over."
---> "Sylvie had read somewhere that the more times a story was told, the less accurate it became. Humans were prone to exaggeration; they leaned away from the parts of the narrative they found boring and leaned into the exciting spots. Details and timelines changed over years of repetition. The story became more myth and less true. Sylvie thought about how she and William rarely told their story and felt pleased; by not being shared, their love story remained intact."
---> "Sylvie wondered if bravery was wedded to loss: You did the unthinkable thing and paid a price."

Wat een prachtig boek was dit! Meeslepend in het analytische en het reflecterende, de gewilde en ongewilde wederzijdse afhankelijkheid en hoe dat doorwerkt in alle relaties. Een ode aan sterke vrouwen die ieder hun eigen weg zoeken in een tijd dat dat nog zeker niet vanzelfsprekend was en die hun kracht halen uit hun onderlinge band en het loskomen daarvan. Vier zussen die opgroeien met het verhaal van ‘Little women’ en zichzelf en de drie anderen herkennen in karaktereigenschappen van Jo, Meg, Amy en Beth March.
Dit alles wordt vervlochten met het verhaal van William. Het boek begint bij de jeugd van William. Hij groeit op in een liefdeloos gezin na het overlijden van zijn zusje als hij drie dagen oud is. Zoals hij het zelf beschrijft: 'Hij wist dat een vader geweldloos aanwezig kon zijn in het leven van een kind en dat kind evengoed kon verwoesten. Het verdriet van zijn ouders had hem vormgegeven, als een gletsjer die zich zwijgend door een dal voortbeweegt.' (p.245).
Dan ontmoet William Julia, de oudste van de vier Padavano-zussen en de fikser in het gezin. Deze rol neemt ze ook op zich in haar relatie met William en William geniet van de koers die ze bepaalt zonder hem om zijn mening te vragen en de familie die hij erbij krijgt. Maar is hun band bestand tegen de duisternis die in William huist en waar hij zichzelf geen raad mee weet? En hoe reageren de andere zussen en hun onderlinge verhoudingen daarop?
Het plot beschrijven is iets wat ik niet kan en niet wil doen. Dit boek is voor mij niet samen te vatten. Het is gelaagd en het raakt zo sterk familiesystemen en de invloed van familieleden op elkaar binnen generaties en eroverheen. Steeds beschrijft Ann gebeurtenissen en de onderstroom van gevoel, gedachten en overtuigingen die daarachter liggen. Hoe dat in elkaar valt, laat ik je graag zelf ontdekken. Veel van ons vonden herkenning, soms pijnlijk, soms troostend, soms inspirerend en anderen leerden vooral andere ervaringen van het leven kennen. In beide gevallen raakt het en komt het verhaal flink binnen ❤️
Ook wil ik een paar rake analyses en prachtige zinnen van Ann delen om je alvast kennis te laten maken met de mooie, rijke taal en schrijfstijl:
‘Hij wiegde de baby in zijn armen en fluisterde in haar kleine oortje: 'Want elk atoom dat mij behoort is evengoed van jou'. (p.79)
'Hij leerde het verschil tussen kalm zijn en afgesloten zijn en werkte eraan meer van het eerste te zijn dan van het laatste. ' (p.197)
'Ze was niet langer wie ze was geweest en ze was nog niet wie ze dan ook aan het worden was. Ze was dankbaar dat haar vader haar had voorbereid op dit moeilijke, eenzame moment. Dankzij hem wist ze daar ze buiten de grenzen van haar eerste en toekomstige zelf kon bestaan, voor een poosje tenminste.' (p.225)

Book club read. Boo tomato. Didn’t get to the end where apparently it improves but my response to that is maybe be a more compelling writer. Also, reads like it takes place in the 50s rather than the 80s.
