Adorable book that I would recommend to children of all ages, especially animal lovers! It will especially hit home with people working in animal rescue as Buddy is adopted from a P-O-U-N-D (you don't say it, you only spell it) after being apparently abandoned by his previous family.

Silver Knight, 2012 (grade 3 list)
This is the first in the "Buddy Files" series. Buddy is a lovable golden retriever who solves mysteries with his nose and by making lists. He narrates the action so we get the dog's eye view on human behavior and how dogs think. In this volume, his boy is lost. We're nervous about this since there's a "stranger danger" possibility that's a bit scary. Compelling conflict (hard to find in transitional readers) and engaging voice make this a winner.

Ready for chapter books? Like dogs and mysteries and books that are a series? Look no further!
King is a golden retriever who has a mystery, well actually 2 mysteries, to solve! King finds himself in the P-O-U-N-D (that's a bad word in doggy talk) at the beginning of the book because he has lost his family! The people he lives with have gone missing and he's found himself in the P-O-U-N-D! He is able to escape from there by being adopted by his new family. And even better, his new family lives right behind his old house! That will make it easier to find his real family. But on his first walk around the neighborhood, he loses his new owner! So now King has to find his old family and new family! This sleuthing dog will have to get busy!
I like this book because it's told in the voice of King. Children will laugh every time King finds food (everything is his favorite food!) and his inability to count! King also talks about his thought process when he goes about solving his mysteries - he makes lists of what he knows, what he needs to find out and from there he makes his action plan.
Warning: this book does have some "Stranger Danger" in it. If reading with a young child, you may want to first discuss what to do if a stranger approaches you and what is ok to say and/or do! It turns out fine in the book, King discovers that the "Scary" Man isn't scary, but actually scared of dogs.
This book is the first in a series and should appeal to young dog-lovers!

I support independent bookstores. You can use this link to find one near you: http://www.indiebound.org
It's harder to find good early chapter books than it it is picture books, middle grade or young adult books, so I'm always happy when I find some. This is the 1st book in The Buddy Files series and I will definitely look for more of them to share with my third graders.

King, a golden retriever, is in the p-o-u-n-d and he doesn't know why! His family, Dad and Kayla (Mom is in the National Guard and not at home) went on vacation to Grandma's house and they never came home!

But now that King is in the pound, other families are looking at him and he is ADOPTED!!!! His new family calls him Buddy! How can King be adopted when Kayla and Dad are missing and he needs to find them?

Buddy/King likes his new family - Conor and Mom are great and have lots of liver treats, plus they live near Kayla's house, so Buddy/King can get clues about his first family's disappearance.

Then Conor goes missing, and Buddy/King has TWO missing families to find. Can he do it?

This series is great for beginning readers looking for longer but not too much more advanced chapter books with good but not scary mysteries! This reviewer has read the first four so far and is anxiously awaiting the fifth!

King is a Dog and he's a Detective, what more needs to be said?
The books in this series are about 120ish pages. The print is large and there are some illustrations. But there are not a lot of pictures. I'm thinking that this series would be a good fit for most 2nd and 3rd Graders.
