For a story published in 1895 this was great. Unfortunately, even though it has some interesting stuff here and there, the story wasn't very engaging for me. I enjoyed The War of the Worlds a lot more, the only other book I read from Wells. Looking forward to other stories from him.

Wonderfully atmospheric.
Well written - as well as pretty snappy for a book published in 1895!
A fascinating insight into the time and Wells' aspirations for the future. Interesting, too, to read his own afterword written more than 30 years later, essentially trashing it as amateurish when it persists as a classic so many years later - especially as we still use so many of his ideas in time travel stories today. Oh alright. 5*.

Philosophically interesting, well-written, and really enjoyable to listen to. The narrator is an excellent reader, and the book was a great look at the beginning of the science fiction genre and the late 1800s view of a post apocalyptic future. Definitely my favorite book I’ve read so far this year

So, the biggest reason I read this one at this time is b/c I recently finished a rewatch of Better Call Saul. If you've seen it, you know this book plays a background role in the final episode. While I certainly like to retain an appreciation for the classics, I think this is a good example of why I don't read them more often. I thought it was ok. I'm also certain there's some kind of deeper meaning to this one that didn't resonate with me but taken at face value it's an ok story but geeze, not a very forward thinking picture of the future in the late 1800s, was it? I did like the ending a bit - kind of leaves it up to you what happened to the guy - but as far as the particular travel we did get to hear about - I just didn't find it all that compelling. It was a slug to the end. In fact when I started it I thought I might read this and War of the Worlds back to back - I ended up just passing on that idea. LOL
