A novella length story inspired by the Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen.
Royal Naval Lieutenant Robert Brenton lost his foot at Trafalgar and has returned home intending to retire to his humble country estate.
He sees Miss Holly Addison, his friend's sister at a ball and is captivated by her grace and beauty.
They are thrown together by circumstances relating to Holly's failed betrothal and come to know and develop tender feelings for one another.
I was impressed by the quality of writing, especially describing Robert's emotions. The dialogue flowed and felt historically accurate. The story was satisfying, with plenty of conflict that was tidily resolved.
In the beginning I thought Holly's character was self-centred and not particularly likeable. I found it hard to see what Robert liked about her other than her physical attributes. She did soften up a bit toward the end though which redeemed her a little for me.
I also loved the Cover Art

It was interesting seeing how the author used the classic story. Though I could trace the original tale, she did well at making the retelling seem natural and realistic. I liked both characters (except for the heroine's insistence on believing well of her scummy ex-fiance), and the writing was smooth. The story was clean and had a happily ever after. It's a nice Regency read.
The third book in this series was a new to me author, and we will surely meet again, Arlem Hawks!
Holly was about to get married, which she was very excited about, but her fiancé broke the engagement accusing her of bad behavior. Now with her reputation in shambles, she ends up in the countryside, coincidentally in the same house as Robert, her brother’s friend, who lost a foot in the war.
I loved the way Holly’s character developed. She turned from a shallow society miss to a very likable heroine and I rooted for her. There’s material for a full length novel here, but the novella worked for me too.
4,5 stars, this series is so much fun!

The character development here is just A+!!!!! Like its not even 100 pages but the romance and the characters delivered so well! Wow i love it sooo much!!
A regency retelling of The Steadfast Tin Soldier. I didn't know the original story before reading this book, but that did not diminish my enjoyment of this novella. It could easily be a full novel - while reading, I kept finding myself wanting even more as I grew attached to the main characters. I enjoyed watching Holly's development throughout the story, and Robert is a good natured soldier who is so easy to love!
While the heroine took me a bit to warm up to, I really enjoyed the hero and seeing him grow and change with her.
