I don’t usually reach for Zombie or YA, but my husband suggested I give Rot and Ruin a try.
Along with a unique perspective towards Zombies, this book slaps you in the face with heavy and complex themes of loss and acceptance. It touches upon grief and rage, as well as good and evil. Honestly, I only remembered it was YA when reminded that the main characters are 14/15 years old.
This book gives one of the most horrifying descriptions of zombies I’ve ever read… and it’s not even that gory. (Spoiler alert)Imagining hundreds of zombies just… standing completely still in a horde is terrifying compared to a slowly lumbering one .
Also, Tom (the older brother) has my heart ~
I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for a zombie book without all of the graphic violence and gore or want a zombie read that focuses more on society/interpersonal relationships!

I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much I loved this book. It's clearly written for the YA market and I kind of hated the juvenile formatting but found the story so rich that I could dive beyond the aesthetics.
As the cover tagline states - it's full of heart - and it is! And yes, it made me cry - so, as far as easy, loveable (violent, tender, gruesome, captivating) summer reading goes, this one is a win.

I really liked this book. It took me a while to pick it up and start reading, but once I did it was hard to put down.
TOM. I like Tom. I liked the unique take on zombies in this book. Yes, I got bored sometimes but it was still a pretty good book. I wish I knew more about Lilah and Nix. Will read the next book.

I wasn't even sure I would like this book, not having read any other books about zombies. I've seen a few zombie movies, but mostly comedies, and they didn't engross me enough to prompt me to immerse myself into the zombie fan culture.
However, after reading Rot & Ruin, I can finally say that I am dying (no pun intended) to get my hands on more zombie fiction. Nom nom.
I absolutely love this book. It's about so much more than zombies. It's about humanity, hope, grief, courage, love. Honestly, I mean this in the best possible way, but I kept having to remind myself that Rot & Ruin was written by a man and not a woman. The center of the story is filled with so much heart and emotion, I think this book will speak to everyone, zombie lover or no. It might even make you zombie curious, as it has me.
Please, believe all the hype and pick up this book asap and devour it. You will not be sorry.

Not a big zombie fan but I really like the difference that this author put on the novel.
First of all; if you're a zombie fan, READ THIS BOOK.
It's amazing, it's not all that Dawn of the Dead kind of stuff where there's a small, smalllllll bunch of survivors trying to survive in a bloody shopping mall or whatever. It's a dystopian novel.
The main, main character is Benny Imura. At first, you might dislike him, I sure did. But as you go on, you witness his growth and change and you just learn to love him, almost as much as you love his brother, Tom.
Yes, I fell in love with Tom Imura. It makes me sad that the story didn't get enough of him, but it was still great! The characters are worth liking and there's an actual plot and such.
Point is that it's an amazing book once you give it a chance. Recommended guys!
