3.74 AVERAGE

I think this was a very solid first volume. I really enjoyed how fun and unique the story was. I will definitely be checking out the rest of this series. I would say my rating is more of a 4.5 stars, and I really wavered between giving it a five stars. I think there was only one thing that threw me off in this volume, the girl at the very end. Other than her the characters are awesome!

This starts with action, flame people, fights scenes, and creepy smiles!!! This manga is an underdog story that I need in my life! If you love Naruto, Black clover, FMA, and One Piece, then this is the manga for you!!!

So disappointing!! There was an interesting premise here and then unnecessary crude humor had to ruin it. For years people have been spontaneously combusting and lately seem to take on powers and become fire devils that wreak havoc. Our main character’s mother was taken by a fire and he himself has some fire controlling powers (and a creepy devilish grin). Wanting to be a hero and find out the truth about his mother’s death he becomes the newest recruit of the Fire Squad 8, whose HQ is in a cathedral and there’s a nun on the team. There were some questions left to be answered about the world but unnecessary nudity (did we really need a shower scene with the only two female characters randomly at the beginning??) and unnecessary groping (another recruit distracts our MC during a competition by having him fall into her breast and grope her??) left me feeling icky after reading it and not interested in reading more. Super bummer because other than those things it seemed interesting.

My first manga ever (gifted by a friend) I thought it was pretty funny and humorous but the fan service was definitely a surprise. I don’t exactly know how I feel about it :/

Overall, the plot, world building, and characters seemed to be very simplistic and thus sorta basic

Thoughts: Not gonna lie, I avoided this series for a while mostly due to me being unmotivated to finish [b:Soul Eater, Vol. 01|6406018|Soul Eater, Vol. 1 (Soul Eater, #1)|Atsushi Ohkubo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1443900841l/6406018._SY75_.jpg|6594903]. I like Soul Eater, but with all the other manga I was reading at the time (and I have since found new series) I just decided to put it on hold. I didn't want to start Fire Force until I finished Soul Eater, but decided to go for it since I caught up to most of the ongoing weekly series that I've been reading.

I initially read Chapter 0 and Chapter 1 and put it down for a day. I was intrigued, so I went back to it yesterday morning. Since then I've sped through up til Chapter 90, and I can honestly say that I'm hooked. New stuff has been getting added when it comes to the Fire Abilities, and even though the latest one I encountered
Spoiler the one with time, dimensions, as well as uncovering an alternate world of flame
is a bit out there, it doesn't deter me at all and I'm still fully invested.

Whereas with Soul Eater I liked it but didn't mind putting it down for a long period of time, Fire Force is one that just interested me enough to keep catching up and still take the plunge to start buying physical copies. The first volume isn't anything special, but seeing that at the time of this review I'm at Chapter 90 (which I think is probably around Volume 11) I feel very confident that I will continue liking the series. I highly encourage reading up to Volume 3 if possible so you can get a proper feel of the story, characters and abilities.

Little note for myself: I'm honestly thinking of going back to every single manga review I have on Goodreads and applying it only to the first volume. It just begins to be a hassle with the way GR is set up to rate and review each individual volume. It really skews my average ratings on here and begins to be a pain to sort through.
