Mattie Ross is a girl on a mission... to bring her father's murderer, Tom Chaney, to justice. To do so, she hires the only man around she feels has "true grit," U.S. Marshal Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn, a one-eyed drunkard renowned as much for his ability to catch a criminal as for the high mortality rate incurred by many of those same criminals. Joined by Texas Ranger LaBouef who has been on Chaney's trail for other crimes, the three head into Indian Territory in Oklahoma to find the illusive criminal and bring him back, preferably alive, but dead wouldn't be bad either.

Told from the point of view and in the voice of Mattie Ross, this is an amazingly well told story that can easily resonate with almost any aged reader. Mattie's outlook on life is not necessarily what you might expect from a 14-year-old. She has lived through things that most people four times her age may never see and it shows in her take-no-crap attitude and willingness to put herself out there to get a task done. I really enjoyed reading it and got it done in a single day, albeit because I was in an airport and on a couple of flights at the time.

I highly recommend it to just about anyone.

Completely wonderful read. Would recommend to nearly anyone.

This book was a joy to read. Despite the sordid plot line, of a woman recounting her time as a teenager where she hired a man to hunt down her father's murderer and bring him to justice, the book has a light tone and can be very funny at times. I can not speak highly enough to the style of [a:Charles Portis|27034|Charles Portis|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1197496305p2/27034.jpg]. It was an exceptionally quick read, and I look forward to seeing what the new Coen Brothers movie will do with such rich source material. This read has also piqued my interest in the old John Wayne version from a few decades back.

I always thought Spaghetti Westerns were a bit cliché, so I wasn’t exactly excited to read True Grit for my work’s book club. Man, was I wrong! This book was an absolute delight—gritty, engaging, and full of sharp wit. It tells a badass story with a protagonist who refuses to be underestimated. In my opinion, Mattie is the one who truly embodies true grit
