True Grit

4.5. A truly excellent book. I love Mattie Ross, as I love all spunky and obstinate 14-year-old girls.

Damn fine book. The voice of Mattie Ross is maybe the clearest, most consistent I’ve ever read.
Portis took two characters archetypes, the stubborn, precocious kid and the gruff drunk with a hero’s heart, filters out the treacle and leaves just what’s true slashed on the page.
And it’s a page turner to boot.
Classic.

A naive, pious and preachy protagonist/narrator with no self-awareness laconically droning over a story that could be good if the writing didn't suck out all of the fun and make the reading experience utterly devoid of emotion and excitement. I understand that for some people it adds a level of humor to the book, but I just couldn't find any enjoyment in it.

couldn't put it down, not too challenging, made me whimsically nostalgic for adventure books
adventurous emotional hopeful tense fast-paced

One of the great American Westerns, True Grit is now better known for its classic film adaptations, but the book is worth reading. Mattie Ross is a great character and Rooster Cogburn is fantastic supporting role. Fans of the films will enjoy though I still favor the original movie more.
