mattie ross you will always be famous

The book is great. The reader for the audio version, Donna Tartt, is not. I almost didnt continue past 2 minutes of listening because of her. But the story is good and worth it.

Never in a million years would I have picked up this almost-50-year-old novel on my own. When it was announced last month for the next book club reading, I inwardly groaned, sad that I would miss a month of drinking wine and talking books with this cool group. But, then I thought that I should just give it a try, especially when I heard our host say that it's actually a little humorous. I borrowed it from the library, and when I started reading it, I was shocked to find that I didn't want to stop! I actually enjoyed this for its narrator character, a feisty and strong teenage girl whose inherent strengths were clearly not typical at the time. Her portrayal like this surprised me from a male author in the 1960s. I'm looking forward to watching the more recent film adaptation as I've heard that it sticks closely to the book's telling of the story.

I just finished this book while on vacation, and I have to say I loved it. Apparently I’m going through a “badass female protagonist” phase, because this short novel follows 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who’s off to seek revenge for the murder of her father. She convinces a crusty, old, super mean, drunk US Marshall to help, and off they go. The story is told from Mattie’s perspective, and the style is stark, quick-moving and straightforward. Honestly, it’s a breath of fresh air for me: so different than what I normally read, and I am loving it. Don’t be scared off by the little “WESTERN” tag on the spine; yes, there are cowboys, but there is not a cliche to be found. The whole thing is actually quite funny, especially when the decorum of the Old South meets the rough Old West. There are snakes, horses, and a whole hell of a lot of guns. Summer reading at is finest.

“What have you done when you have bested a fool?”

“You do not think much of me, do you, Cogburn?"

"I don't think about you at all when your mouth is closed.”

1st read.
