Darcy's a bit chattier than I am used to but I suppose that's due to Elizabeth's influence. Much better sequel to P&P than Mary B. This was entertaining whereas that was

Never finished it -- I have a growing fondness for the mystery genre and a well-established fondness for Austen. This book just annoyed me -- do I care about Darcy's inner doubts or the servants' home lives? I was halfway through and no progress on the murder that kicked everything off. Glad I only paid a buck at a used place. Not my cup of tea, as it were.

Eh...

I didn't look for Austen, I wasn't looking for P.D. James, in reading this I was simply searching for diversion. I found it. A drawback was the approach to well loved characters. I read some Austen continuations, I am used to having Darcy and Elizabeth somewhat changed. I HATED what was done to some of the supporting characters, namely Charlotte and Colonel Fitzwilliam. But nothing was as horrid as the miniseries, if the book warped P&P, then the miniseries was a travesty.

i thought i wanted to spend some more time at pemberley, but i was wrong. i'll just have to settle for P&P on a continuous loop because this was a straight up snooze.

James' prologue was delightful - catching the reader up with the six years since Elizabeth and Jane were married - and lifts your hopes. The plot of the book...woof. The mystery is very poorly plotted, Elizabeth has little to do and any pretences of historic accuracy fly out the window the moment the characters worry about...moving the body.

This has a reputation as one of the best Austen sequels. It's about as good as Mrs. Bennet's boiled potatoes.

I also ordered a collection of James' stories and now I'm hesitant to get started. Her writing was very dry and, in places, repetitive.

Liked it more than I thought and less than I hoped
