This is a basic shifter story with fated mates and conflict between packs. I enjoyed it, I think Steele was a nice character but I found Mila a bit lacking. I guess I prefer love interests that don't just accept everything as is, like I don't know if I could just be like "Oh you're a werewolf and we're mates, cool. Can I move in?"

A fast-paced storyline that throws a ton of drama and danger at the female lead character in the first few chapters. Mila walks in on her fiancé having sex with her best friend the night before their wedding, runs into and is attacked by a bear and then is rescued by a sexy alpha wolf shifter.
Mila is immediately attracted to Steele and soothed by his kind and attentive treatment. She doesn’t know it, but Steele is a wolf shifter and he is surprised yet certain she’s his fated mate.
The storyline includes a threat to the Moonstone Pack by a new pack that recently moved to the area wanting to take pack lands. The danger is more that Steele and his lieutenants realize, until they discover Mila has been kidnapped as bait to instigate a fight for control of the Moonstone pack.
So much takes place in a short time period.

Quick Summary: A shapeshifter romance
My Review: Steele by Margo Bond Collins is book one in a new para-fantasy romance series. It features an alpha lead named Steele Jacobs and a human woman named Mila Wright.
About the Book:
Mila - > This was meant to be the one of the happiest moments in her life. She was getting married tomorrow, after all. Everything changed, however, when she suffered the cruelest betrayal of all. There would be no reconciliation for her and her ex. She couldn't get away from him fast enough. Unfortunately, in getting away from her fiance, she inadvertently placed herself in harm's way. Who would save her from what was surely a sudden death?
Steele - > Being alpha to his pack was no hardship. He cared about his family and would always look after them. Sometimes, if he was being honest, he wanted more. He wanted someone to share his life with. He knew what he could do for the good of his pack, but... Too much was going on for him to dwell on any of that, especially now that a threat was upon his family. Would he ever get a chance to find his mate?
My Final Say: I liked this book. It was a good start to what has the potential to be a solid series. It moved at a slow to moderate pace. It introduced a number of interesting characters. It had minimal conflict, while also laying the groundwork for more. It had a satisfying ending and an enticing hint at what comes next.
I think readers will enjoy meeting the Moonstone pack. They seem to have a lot going for them.
Other: While I liked the book enough to give the next book a chance, I will say that there was one negative reference to the female lead that I genuinely did not care for. It was related to her size. I was incredibly disappointed to see her referred to with such unflattering language at times. With that said, it was refreshing to read about a full figured lead. Right on!

If you are looking for a steamy paranormal read, this one is not for you. But, if you’re craving a paranormal shifter romance with tropes like, fared mate, plus size female lead, small town vibes, and the damsel in distress, then this is the book for you! It took me a bit longer to finish this one, I’m blaming it on the lack of spice. I enjoyed the story line and shifter mind link magic. Collins writing is very easy to get lost in and the romance didn’t feel forced (though very instalove). I am interested in picking up the next book in the series and see what happens to the Moonstone pack!

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Steele was a quick, easy-to-read shifter/paranormal romance. I was hoping for a little bit more of a love story, but the fated mates trope did most of the heavy lifting instead of investing in character development.
I had a hard time with many of the conversations around Mila's weight, and wish there had been a trigger warning about that topic. I also get put off when books primarily refer to women as "females," which I've noticed is pretty common in shifter romances, and was definitely the case with Steele.
Overall, I think this was a good introduction to a new series, and a relatively fun, quick, read. 3 stars.
