The Wife Upstairs

Decent thriller. Enjoyed the southern gated neighborhood setting and the Jane Eyre references. It's no Hogarth Press adaptation and I felt that the Eyre framework strained the ending a bit but overall a fun, fast read.

I thought this book was pretty good. This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and both books have been fine, but not mind blowing. Personally, I like a nice clean tied up ending, and Hawkins tends to leave things slightly ambiguous. I was definitely engrossed in the story, just not as much as other books I’ve read.

THE WIFE UPSTAIRS is a complex and twisted thriller, one that will stay imprinted on your mind for days to come! I love when authors take a chance and write books with devious characters and Rachel Hawkins did this brilliantly! This has got to be one of the most unique thrillers that I’ve read in a long time and I attribute this to the complexities of the characters and their motivations. This one my friends, is insanely good. If you’re looking for a book that you’ll devour for hours without looking up this is THAT book for you! I enjoyed it immensely.

I had really low expectations since I really don’t like Jane Eyre all that much. However, I saw a lot of people talk about how much they enjoyed this and figured I would give it a shot.

The majority of the story and “twists”- which aren’t twists since, you know, this is a retelling- are lackluster. Jane herself is really dislikable… she’s a kleptomaniac? Okay? Her “I don’t care and I do what I need to do to survive, oh and plus I hate rich white people” attitude is so unlike the original Jane. This Jane is so unnecessarily spiteful. It left me in a bad mood whenever I read it, since so much of her thought process is being mad about those around her having riches while she is poor.

I don’t know if the author purposefully did this to contrast from the original, but if anything, it put me off on this book even more.

There really aren’t any true “twists” to this story if you’ve read the original Jane Eyre.
fast-paced

I was really engrossed in this story. I am not sure why because it was not exactly 'thrilling' but I think it was the Southern charm -- who knew that was my kinda thing!? But, I have not read Jane Eyre so I went into this not knowing that story and this was a retelling. Maybe that is why I was disappointed with the end. No plot twists... just a story, which is fine - but as a thriller, I expect a few twists and turns. I guess those did exist but the ending fell flat for me. Still a solid 4 star thriller (which, let's be honest -- that is sooo typical for me anyway).
