Most of this book was decidedly mid. I was optimistic at the beginning for an interesting premise, but the story was a bit boring and I didn't care about any of the characters. The "big twist" at the end was poorly done and actually made me look up the publication date since it was such an early 2000s type of twist. Very poorly executed and very much overdone in this genre. Not a horrible book, but not when I would recommend to anyone either.

Dear End of Story,
I am not really sure what made me start listening to you. I know all of the controversy surrounding your author, and I guess I just had some idle curiosity about his second book. I didn't hate you, but I didn't really love you either. I wasn't expecting the twists and ultimate conclusion at your end, but I feel like it was a performative ending. While finding out who killed the first wife was a decent twist, I didn't believe the way your story drew out what happened to the son, and it wasn't written in a believable way. I struggled to get into your writing as well. It almost felt like you were written with a word length in mind. There were many times that you said something with 15 words that could have been said with 5.

I liked the writing—there were some great descriptions and phrases. Some that were just right. I didn’t think the reveal was a very big reveal cause the name. It’s the name. The number of red herrings was distressing and bogged down the plot, and the reveal of the final murders was anticlimactic. So like. So often the plot is let down by the writing but in this case the writing was let down by the plot. And while I see how he coded his character—I mean. This was so clearly written by a man, with his descriptions of female beauty as their value or primary characteristics, his assumption of weakness. And how does Sebastian get off scot free?

Classic mansion mystery with a twist. Only thing I didn’t like was the unreliable narrators.

the ending of this book is what made me like it. i really only finished it because i saw a tiktok that talked about how libraries only have a finite number of checkouts per digital book and i didn’t want to waste it since i definitely wasted others. the first page captured my attention but it was so slow until the last part when everything was being revealed
i really liked the ending and did not see the twist coming at all but thinking back over the book it made sense and i’m annoyed with myself for not picking up on the clues !!like nicky wearing long sleeves and not liking flying and adding the last entry to cole’s diary. when madeleine was reading the diary and saw the last entry i was so confused on how nicky didn’t see it and i was like ??? when did cole get in the attic to add that in ??
i also could not figure out who killedhope and cole and it was driving me crazy. i thought freddy was off but i didn’t really think he was the killer but i couldn’t figure out who had actually done it bc there weren’t that many options
diana’s death made me sad :( she just wanted to leave unpause her life and she never got the chance :(
i’m mostly annoyed with myself for falling asleep and not finishing the book so i could’ve finished 4 books in january lmao

Utterly unexpected and immensely satisfying. It felt like doing a jigsaw puzzle without the reference picture, at times it was really confusing but I put my trust in the process and this author did not disappoint.
There was so much darkness beneath the surface, which made a great hiding place for the red herrings. There were also lots of references to classic noir fiction, book and film.
If you loved Woman In The Window, you will love this.
