The blurb was very enticing. Unfortunately since the moment I started reading, I had a feeling I wouldn’t like this book because the writing didn’t appeal to me at all. It felt disconnected and not cohesive. Although this book had a great potential with the plot and the forbidden element to it. But it just wasn’t angsty at all. I couldn’t feel Billie’s pain when she learnt the truth about Jared nor the guilt that he harboured when he dated her while lying to her. When they were separated, their misery wasn’t palpable at all. I wish it had more depth to it, a little more emotion to instil more feelings in the reader.

I really loved this book! Marni Mann is an excellent writer and she kept me on the edge of my seat with this one! Before You had me experiencing all the emotions and I was never sure what would happen next. I haven’t read a book like this before and I enjoyed reading it so much. Every book I’ve read from Marni has been great and this one was no exception.

Marni does a great job writing unique characters that you can’t help but feel invested in. Billie and Jared were so real and I couldn’t help but feel everything as they experienced it. They didn’t have it easy, and honestly my heart broke for them over and over. I really believed that they were meant for one another though, and had faith that Marni would take their story where it was meant to go.

I will say that while this ending was mostly satisfying, it felt like things weren’t entirely finished. I am hoping that Marni will give us more of the story as I would love to read more about these characters. Rest assured though that if this is all we get, it is definitely worth the read and does not leave the reader hanging. This was a great book and I think readers are going to love it!

I wouldn’t say this is a good or bad romance. I really liked the suspense between the two storylines and how they’re connected. It kept me guessing until it all finally clicked about 80% of the way. The ending needed more heartbreak or something even more dramatic for my personal liking. I did listen to this on audio so maybe it just needed more umph. Overall solid 3.75 ⭐️’s.

Before You is a unique and unpredictable book with a mystery that kept me guessing up until the end.

Billie and Jared’s relationship is told in alternating first person points of view, and I enjoyed the way their story unfolds. We know fairly early on that Jared is lying to Billie, but I had no idea what secrets he was hiding or if he was even a good guy.

Where the book suffers is in the disjointed integration of an additional storyline. Honey’s story is one long flashback and I had trouble keeping up with the jumping timelines. Unlike the rest of the book, this storyline is told in the third person. I felt unconnected to Honey and Andrew and was always anxious to return to Jared and Billie’s story. The prologue also threw me because while it seems to add to the mystery, it is only thinly connected to the main plot and really rather unnecessary.

Two strong main characters, an age gap romance, some action-packed moments, and an intriguing puzzle make up the backbone of the book and are the main source of appeal.

The format of this book and the main 4 characters kept me wondering how this story would come together.
