A powerful exploration of racism, religion, lgbt erasure and sexism through the eyes of a young black lady called Celie and her sister. You follow her from her arranged marriage, separation and her bisexual relationship with Shug. You read about the growth of all characters involved in the stories as they age. From Celie finding her independence to her sister recovering from being cast out by her family.

Writing: powerful. Evocative of the South and Africa.
Plot/characters: you are drawn to the characters. You are pulled into their lives and issues. You can’t help but feel for them.
Profundity: yes, it’s about race. It’s an embarrassment of a time if you’re white. But it’s also about God and how God fits into our life. That’s what sticks most for me.

I had no idea this book was gay when I started reading it, and I can't believe I never knew! Half a star extra for that.

Wow. I feel like I read it in a second. If I wasn’t human and didn’t need sleep I would have read it in one sitting. I genuinely feel like I know Celie, Nettie, Shug and Sofia; not as characters but as real life people. There’s so much violence and trauma in this novel, but it isn’t hopeless, it doesn’t only bring misery. It brings human capacity for change and understanding. It shows how others can inflict pain but they can also help you find your inner strength and your voice. This is a beautiful book and I can’t wait to read more from Alice Walker. A must read for everyone.

A tough start with the family traumas, but still a beautiful love among family through hardship. I found the missionary experiences in Africa the most interesting.

This story gets me every time, no matter the format. The book, film, and musical have all made me sob. This story is about trauma, forgiveness, strong female relationships, and God, though not in the way most people think. I agree with Alice Walker that God isn’t a ‘Him’ up in the sky at all. It’s all the good and beauty in the world. It’s all the good we are and can be. This story always reminds me that everyone has a purpose in this world, to be and to enjoy being. Not necessarily toxic happiness, but enjoying both the sad and happy times because we exist despite the odds.
