I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this book.  It felt a bit lacking at first, though I can't pinpoint what it was I felt was lacking.  I almost put it down after the first two chapters but then I convinced myself to keep reading.  And I'm glad I did, because I enjoyed it.

It felt slightly juvenile, slightly bland, with him being the stereotypical I can't be bothered and her leaning into the bumbling idiot when she's not doing her job being a badass.  It felt a little trite and tropey at first.   But the author managed to make mistaken/unknown dual identities fun as it all played out.

You definitely don't want to stop reading about the bumbling idiot of a slayer and the too old to care but suddenly catches feeling vampire.  And it ends up being a mostly fun read.

I know this review hasn't been especially nice, but I don't regret reading this book.  And I'll happily read the next one in the series.  Lord knows I couldn't write something half as good, lol.

3.5 Stars. While the Magiford Universe has definitely become one of my go-to comfort reads for when nothing else is really appealing to me, I would be the first to admit that the first books in the trilogies tend to be the most mediocre. This one was no exception, though I do appreciate the slight detour from the standard "it ends with one of them f#cking up and the other spending book 2 pi$sed at them" that developed in the previous series (though I suspect it was just delayed to the end of book 2 in this case).

Also, for a Very Very Old Vampire, Connor speaks too much like a Millennial for me to take his character seriously. Being adaptable is one thing, but vocal syntax is another, especially considering the reveal of when he was actually Turned. Cultured Calculating and (mostly) Ice Cold Killian - *significantly* younger and equally as adaptable - reads more like an old vampire than Connor, who comes of like a DudeBro in comparison.

Oh, Jade my beloved awkward slayer. I feel her pain interacting with other people and overthinking everything!
Good thing she has at least added one more friend to her roster despite her shortcomings.
