After That Night

Karin Slaughter

4.2 AVERAGE

I love everything Karin Slaughter writes. This one fell short for me, in part, due to the absolute laughably incredulous plot line of a group of doctors running a “rape group”. Doctors who operated on pediatric patients, saving their lives, only to systematically rape them once they were adults. I mean…come on. Seriously??? Are there bad/evil doctors out there? Sure. But a collective of doctors (and their sons!!! What?!?) working together to rape, and in some cases murder, patients?? That belies credulity.

WOW. Such great twists and turns, had me glued the whole time! One reason I wouldn’t put in my “absolute must reads” is there is a lot of medical and police terms used that can have you tune out a bit. But forsure, a definite 5 star!!

Trigger warning: Anyone who has been sexually assaulted might have trouble with some very graphic parts of the story.

When the Will Trent TV show started, I had to separate Will, Faith, Amanda and others from their depictions in the books. This is the first Will Trent book I've read since the series, so it was hard to read the name without picturing the TV character. But when I was able to separate them again, all was well.

Anyway, the story begins with a rape trial in which Will's fiancee, Dr. Sara Linton is a witness. It brings back memories of her rape 15 years earlier. Then the mother of the man who is on trial -- who has a long history with Sara -- tells her that her rape and the rape of the woman at the center of the trial are related.

Will, Faith and Sara uncover a sick scheme that goes back years and years and, just as they're about to tie it all up there's a shocking twist.

This is one of the best Will Trent books, in my opinion.

Huge thank you to Netgalley & Blackstone Publishing for this ALC of After That Night by Karin Slaughter.

This is the 11th installment of the Will Trent series and it felt so good to be back with Will, Sara, Faith & Amanda! Per usual, Karin is not shying away from the horrors and dark depravity of the case they are working on and the history behind it. This book is a great example of why I always tell people to read Grant County and then Will Trent in order because it is just so much more emotional that way. I love Sara so much and with each book I just grow to love her more and the way she had to revisit her past in this one was so heartbreaking but I was also just so proud of her.

Will, Faith, and Amanda were hilarious in this one. I love their relationships and how they have grown over the series and they always make me feel like I am right there in the room with them. If Will and Faith are in trouble...I am in trouble. And I love it. I am so interested to see what happens with Jeremy after this one.

(Narration review): Kathleen Early killed this as ALWAYS. Her consistency with these characters and their specific voices is amazing and I am just in awe when I listen. She needs to read you these books so do yourself a favor and listen to the audios. There are lots of great narrators out there, but Kathleen w/ a Karin Slaughter is another level.

So so so SO good. I am now going to be in a deep depression because I finished this too fast and now have to wait until god knows when for the next one.

I love these characters but the plot on this one is pretty insane.

So good. I love that it wrapped up something from the beginning of the series.

She did it again! This was an amazing and sometimes heartbreaking read. I can’t wait until the next Will & Sara book, although hopefully for them their next case won’t be so personal.
