Olivia Dade

3.72 AVERAGE

funny lighthearted fast-paced

This book was my introduction to Olivia Dade’s books and her stories set in the world of Gods of The Gates fan fiction. Dade writes leading men who are good and against their stereotype, and her heroines are strong, but vulnerable. They’re real. Marcus’ and April’s journey from online confidantes to lovers is a great introduction into fan fiction and Hollywood comings and goings. The obligatory HEA doesn’t disappoint and isn’t rushed or contrived.

Spice level = 6/10, well written, descriptive, but not unnecessarily explicit or gratuitous

In some ways this book healed me.

In some ways this book bored me.

A perfectly executed romcom that has something vital to say. Also just incredibly charming through and through, particularly in its depiction of fan communities. You think you were wronged by Game of Thrones? Your beef is nothing compared to Olivia Wade’s.

this took me a while to read bc i got really depressed like halfway through

I didn't expect much of this, nothing realistic, just something quick and fun. And under that mind set going into it, it was an alright read. If only the mlst juicy bits weren't skipped and just told at the start of the next chapter - juicy as in the hidden identity reveal for example, not juicy as in sexual. I found this was a bit of a waste but that might be a me-thing.

Just realized this review was sitting in my drafts for 2 months. Oops!

2.75-ish, which is dumb, so I'm rounding to 3. This was alright. I liked our protagonists and their goals, and I liked the smut, but I didn’t like that the show and storyline was blatantly about Game of Thrones. The hero’s name is even Marcus Cater-Rupp, and he’s very obviously supposed to be Nikolai Coster-Waldau. The showrunners have similar names, and one uses his initials, just like David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. I just didn’t like that this was so heavily inspired by real people - it made me a little uncomfortable.

I also thought it was a bit difficult to get through because you can see from the start EXACTLY what the 80% conflict is and EXACTLY how it will play out, so it loomed very obviously over my entire reading experience. The conflict in general was just really dumb and only sprang about because of doubts and a lack of communication, not any real issue the couple faced.

I find it odd that April judged Marcus for his “dim” social media profiles and brief media appearances, when it seems obvious that someone in the public eye like he is would be keeping things close to the chest.

The parental conflicts with both April and Marcus were flimsy, mostly because the parents don’t actually come up all that much.

I did like the purposefully bad #menwritingwomen thing Olivia Dade does in some of the fake scripts, channeling the showrunners of Game of Thrones.

I think with a stronger conflict and less real-life comparisons to GoT, this would have been a win for me, which is why I’ll still be picking up the next book in the series.

Wow, just wow. As a plus sized person, and someone who has been around geeky things (and the accompanying lore) most of my life, reading Spoiler Alert seemed like a no brainer. I was a little skeptical, given the mixed reviews, but this book felt like it was written for someone like me.

Marcus is the lovable guy every geeky girl wants - handsome, kind, knowledgeable, and humble. April felt like a version of every bad ass geeky woman I know - beautiful, incredibly bright, passionate, and at times, a little insecure. While both characters have baggage, they support one another in ways they don’t necessarily understand at the time. It’s truly a beautiful relationship Dade created.

Something I’ve seen in reviews is the mentions of DMs between characters as well as sections of fan fic. This didn’t bother me and in fact, I think it added to the story. It was cool to see the references made from Marcus’ journey as an actor as well as how far the relationship between Marcus and April had come.
