I think most of the fiction books written in the past couple of years have been compared to Gone Girl and this is no exception. This is NOT Gone Girl, but it wasn't bad. Ani has worked very hard to cultivate the image of perfection that shows the world. But she has a secret -- a tragedy from when she was in school. Other reviewers complained that Ani wasn't very likable, that she is shallow and too focused on appearances, and I would agree, BUT, I also could empathize with the desire to appear a little more together than you feel inside. Chapters alternate between present day and the year of the "incident". The mystery of what happened was interesting enough to keep me reading.

Ani joins the protaganists of Her, Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, and others in the modern trend to tell stories with unlikable female narrators. But while we only get an inkling of what has occurred to make Amy in Gone Girl and Rachel in The Girl on the Train "unlikable," we get a pretty full idea of how Ani ended up striving and clawing to establish herself at the top of the social ladder as this story opens. Although, not a feminist masterpiece, we see very clearly the interactions of gender expectations mixed with class consciousness among the elites and how these forces turn TiFani into Ani. Read this and think.

I really liked the book, honestly. But I can’t really give it a higher rating than this based on the absurdity of
the hard R showing up
like i know i know. i understand whatever excuse is coming, i do. but this is my judgement and i was like jaw unhinged scoff disgusted and found it to be unnecessary!!! Everything else was great. We’ll see how I feel about the netflix adaptation.

I fell into this book even harder than "Gone Girl"... Hearing that the author experienced some of the same things as her main character makes me see it as not just a good read...it's an important good read.
