Beautifully written and I learned a ton of interesting things about so many different animals.
I will say I'm not a fan of how Childs casually describes multiple encounters where he disturbs or interacts with wild animals for his own enjoyment (chasing porcupines to laugh at how they look when they run stands out). He never seems to consider the fact that he's causing these animals to feel unnecessary fear or psychological disturbance. These instances are especially off-putting since he seems to have respect for animals and nature in general. I wanted to give this 4 stars, but I feel like I'd be endorsing interfering with wild animals for no good reason, and that doesn't sit well with me.

This is a book to be savored. If you have even the tiniest affinity for the outdoors, you will find something to appreciate in the many encounter stories in this book. Being a desert rat, I had a particular affinity for the critter encounters featuring animals I have also crossed paths with - rattlesnakes, raccoons, deer, etc. I know the magic of finding a toad in a parched hollow, or the galvanizing shock that comes from realizing, after the fact, how close you had come to a dangerous encounter. I've even encountered a live, beached shark (although mine was much smaller!). I'll be revisiting this book in the future.

I keep checking this out from the library, but I really need to just go ahead and buy it. With its vivid, lively writing, it's a great escape into the wilderness when you can't get away yourself.

Some chapters were so engrossing that I could see, smell and feel where he was- others I was so disinterested I would rather be doing anything else. Nevertheless he made some very good points and bridged fact with experience very well.
- Chapter on deer was my favorite
