If you love New York City, really love New York City, then you'll probably love this book, too.

A great memoir that most introverts/people-watchers will appreciate
Gornick humanizes time and equalizes every artist, passersby, and friend so that we are all consumed with what if’s but steadied by action, reality, and dialogue. She highlights the mundane and calms the ridiculous and the arrogant. It was a collection of thoughts and history that was perfect in length. I won’t find another like it.
A series of mostly unremarkable moments. An occasional flash of brilliant prose. Seemingly inspired by an over-exaggerated sense of one's own suffering, mostly self-inflicted.

I love reading Vivian Gornick. And/but - maybe it's because her memoir of her childhood was so indelible, but to me she seems like such a specific point in time in nyc that it was shocking to be to come across the 9/11 reference in this book, and even more so for me to see that she is currently alive. I don't consider it to be a bad thing that to me she is a very 20th century writer. Maybe her framework continues to present itself in that way in my reading, even when she is describing things that happened this century. I was then comparing this book to [b:The Vulnerables|125930473|The Vulnerables|Sigrid Nunez|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1680838245l/125930473._SY75_.jpg|135510724] but this book is still pre-pandemic. I guess Gornick and Nunez are generationally separate, so maybe this just on me for not reading as many active writers of this age, especially who are women!
