This was a great book!

It has some serious aspects, like discussions and scenes about religious trauma, deportation, racism, homophobia, outings, depression and attempted suicide.

It also had a lot of funny and cute moments, too. It has the beard trope where the “straight” character fake dates the queer character’s partner to avoid coming out.

I loved the different discussions that Bo and Yamilet about their heritage, since Bo is Asian and Yami is Mexican American.

And now I need to rewatch and listen to Selena.

I loved this book!!! I cried happy tears and sad tears and I loved every minute of it. The relationship between Yamilet and Cesar is so wonderful and the development of the relationship with their mom makes my heart so happy! I love reading books about young queer people of color and their journey through high school and how they navigated it through tough times. My heart was so full every time Bo and Yamilet would interact and we could read Yamilet’s internal dialogue. This book was sad and emotional and made my heart full.

Absolutely precious. A joy. Incredibly relatable as an ex-catholic who resonates with lesbian identity and even had a brief stint at private school, but there is also so much in there for everyone: queer joy, familial relationships, rom com vibes, lovable characters, a great sibling dynamic, discussions of culture and connecting with one’s culture, calling out racism and homophobia without question, confidence, and self acceptance.

(Also, totally a side note, but I find it refreshing that the main character knows she’s pretty. So much of this book is refreshing. An honest & meaningful YA rom com. I wish little me had gotten to read this!)

THIS BOOK!!!

If you've ever been a closeted teen, if you grew up in a religious family or an immigrant family, if you've ever been worried about your financial situation to the point of that anxiety starting to run your life, if you went to private school and have complicated feelings about that, if you have really conflicted feelings about certain family members, or if you just want a really adorable yet heartfelt queer coming-of-age story, this novel is for you.

Yamilet is such a hilarious and relatable and heartbreaking protagonist and narrator. I loved her relationship with her brother and how important that relationship was to the plot. I loved Bo as a love interest and how Yami and Bo found similarities and differences in their experiences as two of the only queer people of color at their Catholic high school.

Honestly one of the most accurate representations of being a queer teenager that I've ever read.

It's hard to describe how lovely this book is. Just read it if you think it sounds interesting.

Please check the content warnings, as this book handles a lot of heavy topics, but it handles them all sensitively and delicately.
