I enjoyed this book even though I prefer hard and military Science Fiction. This is definitely Urban Fantasy. The cause of the plague is magical though it spreads through a virus. Some of the characters have magical abilities even before the plague enhances them. The magical good guy characters use magic based on modern Wicca calling themselves witches. Sorcerers, fairies both human sized and tiny and elves are also included amongst the Uncanny. Character development is good though she seems to have caught the George RR Martin virus and kills them off after you have really grown to like them. It almost seems that she wanted the second book to be a reboot.
Reading this 2 years after Covid started struck a nerve, but I pushed through. It dragged on here and there and I didn’t feel the romance between Lana and Max at all.
Woooooo... the whole pandemic beginning was tough, but the magic helped distract from it. Except the really dark magic, yikes! But it’s good.
Emily May nailed it with her review- an incredibly strong start just turns into magickal nonsense outta nowhere. I’m not opposed to supernatural elements if they’re well done, if they make sense, etc, but this book just kinda - spoiler- glosses over 80% of the world dying just to rush through the intro of fairies, shapeshifters, etc. None of it is explained or makes particular sense, the disease comes with magic and some people turn good, some turn bad. That’s it. I get that further books might explain more, but there’s a lack of immersion, here, for me- it’s just done incredibly quickly and without much art or wonder, it’s simply not a thing and then is. May also notes the odd writing style- a huge lack of details with the plot driven by heavy dialogue that is often unclear. Meanwhile there are so many bland characters that I don’t really care who it is speaking- it’s like it doesn’t even matter, the speech is just there to move the story forwards.
Blah, just a very disappointing book- I love Harry Potter, I love dystopian, I love apocalypse fiction- this shoulda/coulda been the perfect meeting of those sub genres, but instead it just feels like a rushed version of “The Stand” for teenagers. It ultimately didn’t feel organic or real, but instead like someone knew what would sell/be a cool idea, but with no real commitment to the world they built. I likely won’t read the next book in the series, and that’s a shame. Whole thing feels forced and unexplained, “magick!” just the cool idea and explanation given for the whole thing.

Ok
Not gonna lie, I was hoping for more of a Nora Roberts level romance. This was just ok for a non romantic apocalypse story.

I could not get past the romance novel writing style and gave up after two chapters.
This book.
Ugh this book.
It is basically 1 am, and I finally finished it. I have been fighting a migraine for days, and it's been sitting there teasing me to finish it. Thankfully, the migraine is leaving the premises and I was able to finish.

I think what I liked most about this was the re-settling after a catastrophe. I read it a while ago and haven't thought about it much since, but I do remember wishing I could find another like this, though I also remember thinking I wish it didn't feel like it was written by a romance author.
