Last Days

Adam L.G. Nevill

3.58 AVERAGE

This is a pretty muddled ghost and demon stew. Tasty in spots but there is too much of it by books end. The reader is left overfull. Last Days is pretty dreary even if the ideas at play are cool. We have a multi-century development of demon possession, reincarnation and every bit of fuckery in between especially in the present where most of the action takes place in the form of a documentary film about a religious group. I appreciate the author's reach here, of the three novels I've read by Adam Nevill, this one is the most ambitious, but it isn't his best. The Ritual remains my favorite.

One of the few horror novels that has actually scared me. At one point, I got out of bed to check the locks on my doors, including my balcony and the windows, never mind that I live in a high rise. Got back into bed only to decide the open closet door was also too scary. Definitely a bit of a slow burn, but great atmosphere, and quick prose. Ending got perhaps a little action heavy and/or rushed, but not bad enough to ruin what was otherwise a phenomenal book.

On the other hand, Nevill’s idea of an Arizona accent and how a person from the American southwest would speak, on the other hand, was atrocious. Those passages are thankfully short, else they’d utterly ruin the book.
