i’m upset that the ending didn’t have a grand plot twist and that dan was alive in the end. seems to happy ending for a thriller book, i guess

Oh man, where do I begin.
Okay, so the problem for me with this book was I would've given it five stars until around the 55% mark. The pacing felt great and then it just fell off for me. I felt like I had reached the climax of the story, and then I realized it was only the halfway mark. What happened for me was all that excitement just fizzled out, and by 70% 1 was ready for the book to be over. It felt way too long and to be honest, by the end of the book l didn't feel satisfied. I felt confused like, "what did I read?", but NOT in the good way.
Another issue was I found myself frustrated by all the characters. I didn't really love anyone (except Dan, Dan is great). The longer it went on it just felt like none of the characters had much growth, and don't get me wrong, I understand what was happening to the main character, but even by the end I didn't really feel for him. The only person I really cared about was Dan.
I think this book would've been much better had the length not been as long. I think my issue with the characters would've still been there, but I think I could've overlooked it. I think the premise was super cool and loved the documentary style, but I don't think the story was as fleshed out as it could've been.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It is hard to find a horror/thriller that doesn't seem like it is recycling the same idea over and over again and Last Days felt like a fresh idea. The characters, the atmosphere, and the dialogue all lent to an overall eerie feeling as I read it. I thought that the ending dragged on a little too long and some of it could have been edited it, but overall it went at a good clip and I had trouble putting it down. Endings in horror books are often disappointing, but I think Last Days did a good job of wrapping it up and not leaving me feeling cheated.
It takes a lot to scare me and I was too terrified to read this one at night. The dream sequences, in particular, were so harrowing that I did not want to encounter one reading before bed. This book kept me engaged all the way from the premise to the end. The way the story comes together in pieces while a terror grows stronger and looms in the background was so brilliantly accomplished. The description of the different settings, as well as the creatures, creeped me out while the plot kept me on the edge of my seat. Going from place to place following Kyle film the documentary was a fantastic plot device to have him discover knowledge along with the reader. I have nothing but praise and admiration for this book and cannot wait to read even more Adam Nevill.

Solid horror mystery that gets wackier until it accelerates to a bang of a conclusion. The writing isn't anything special but it does the trick. Dialogue could be more realistic. Mostly enjoyable!
