I feel like I say this about every book in this series but this man is so over the top but somehow you can’t help but love him by the end.
This was totally bonkers but I couldn’t help but continue reading.
I loved Ryker and how great he was with the kids. Basically he was too overbearing to Calla and I wouldn’t necessarily always love it but then he would interact with the kids and everything would be fine.
I liked that Cala fought him along the way but not always. I also feel like towards the end Ryker should’ve give in a bit and give Cala some choices but what brought this down more for me was Cala deciding (or not, depends on how you look at it) to go with Jason. She disappointed me with that because one thing she knew for sure was that Ryker wasn’t a liar and he told her women and children were off limits and even though he actually did some of it, she should’ve give him the chance to defend himself. She didn’t believed in Ryker and at that point in the story it was unnecessary, she could’ve just been taken.
I loved the kids and I loved seeing the other characters too.
Although this series is over the top and bonkers I will still continue because… I don’t know 😂 I just will.

I have such mixed feelings about this story.

The dynamic is soooo OTT in the problematic alpha male way - know that going in. He’s all “I’ve been stalking you for years and times up - you and your kids are mine now, and there’s nothing you can do about it”, and she’s all “you’re crazy, I’m my own person and make my own choices…” but then major body betrayal. Did I read the whole thing? Yes. It’s like I had major body betrayal too, but of the eyes kept reading kind.

I did like how Ryker was undeniably devoted to his family though, including the kids. That was great. Probably would have liked this book more if (possible spoiler)
they had both given a little bit, but instead it seemed like Calla just accepted that Ryker’s crazy ways led to the right outcome.

A note on the audiobook - I wan’t a fan of the female narrator (the end of her sentences all went up in a weirdly dramatic way) so switched to the ebook.

I know what I’m getting into with these tropes and the genre but it really bugged me this time that the heroine never gets agency. And I think because it really really bugged her. He took over everything, decided everything and she didn’t like it. She finally stands up to him about the adoption papers. Then she’s traumatized and suddenly, the book is over. I hate it because the author didn’t give the heroine .... closure? Agency? He demands she give in ... why? Because She was kidnapped and didn’t fight harder? That’s just a sh*tty reason. And Ryker never once had any empathy for her over it. It did not matter to him. So ... yeah.
And that isn’t loving. ‘I know better and I’m in charge’ is dumb.

For me this one crossed from jealous and possessive to abusive. Subtle and glossed over with how much the kids love him and all but the evil lady wasn’t wrong when she said there are different kinds of abuse and because Calla never actually got to a place of acceptance, as a reader it was grossly unsatisfying. The pattern isn’t going to end and she will never have a say. Ick and ugh.
