Without a doubt one of the best books that I have ever read. There is so much depth in Frank Herbert's world of Dune that it is hard to put it into just one review. It is clear that Herbert spent many years and years masterfully orchestrating this classic. Paul Atreides has become one of my favorite book characters of all time. He is a child that is thrown into this horrible situation with his family and his enemies and rises to the occasion and does what needs to be done to come out on top. I love how Paul is also not a perfect character by any means. He is very flawed and often makes bad decisions that he feels are good at the time of deciding them. (Semi spoiler) The way he is able to rally all of the Fremen to fight behind him to reclaim what is his and put his family back together is astounding. This is not a perfect book but if you love sci-fi/fantasy then this is an absolute must read for you. It is an award winning classic and deserves 5 stars without question.

“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”
This book was an uphill battle for the first two parts. I had to look up no-spoiler 5-star reviews about 100 pages in to convince me to ride it out, and I’m glad I did.
Loved almost everything about it except the creepy all-knowing toddler (yes, sorry to break it to you but you are definitely a weirdo) and the fact that every description of a sandworm elicits a vision of the Alaskan Bullworm from Spongebob (making it quite difficult for me to take them as seriously as I probably should have.) Other than that, solid 4 star read. Super quotable and a fun ride once I finally wrapped my head around the complex worldbuilding and its cunning allusions to our own planet’s politics, religion & ecology.
“And what he saw was a time nexus within this cave, a boiling of possibilities focused here, wherein the most minute action-the wink of an eye, a careless word, a misplaced grain of sand—moved a gigantic lever across the known universe.”

The scope of Dune impresses me. The characters are all somewhat one dimensional, the villains ridiculous and somewhat offensive caricatures, and the ideas occasionally disturbing, but somehow I still really like this book. I think the reason for that is its scope and ambition which it largely succeeds at. The world is large and complicated with rich history, religion and politics. Its a book that I can see the faults in and yet largely do not care since its just such an impressive and fascinating work.

Classic sci-fi story; Herbert creates a huge world with endless possibilities; last 100 pages felt rushed

Interesting to read simply because of its impact on later works, but I personally did not enjoy this book. I found the characters hollow and the plot predictable (probably predictable only because I've read so many things that were inspired by Dune, to be fair).
