An enthralling if meandering exegesis of man's fear of dying. Don Delillo infallibly dissects the neuroses of late capitalism, brilliantly aestheticising the emptiness of the commercial transactions underpinning our lives. An enjoyable, and for that reason, vaguely comforting read. Or is the other way around? White Noise is perhaps just that; an incessant humming background of things we tell ourselves to ward off the inevitable.

“May the days be aimless. Let the seasons drift. Do not advance the action according to a plan.” Page 98.

The last section could have been condensed a little imo but I enjoyed this book even more on a reread. DeLillo has a very snappy, witty writing style which nests profundity, heart, and attentive social commentary. A successful mix of satire and sincerity.

Sorry I somehow made it through the last 30 or so years before getting around to reading this one, but I probably appreciated it more now than I would have when all the hip kids in college were reading it?

I expected this to be a really great read since a) it was recommended by a bookstore seller who'd mentioned other good titles b) it was mentioned and quoted thoroughly in an essay by David Foster Wallace. Maybe it was all the hype but it didn't really make much of an impact on me. It seems a bit pretentious as if the writer is trying too hard at being 'postmodern'. Or maybe that is what postmodern lit is like.

I would have eaten this up in undergrad. I definitely think it’s made to be read in 3 days and discussed for an hour. Drawing it out over several weeks made me feel slightly queasy.
