A by the numbers suspense novel. All of the characters have secrets, but none of them have the feel of fleshed out real people. Feminists will gag over how easily the well-educated, upper middle class women are manipulated by a construction worker with charisma.

“Sometimes the fantasy is nothing like the reality.”
Well, I didn’t see that coming!
This thriller did an amazing job of keeping the pace up and the surprises coming. While I felt like I had the ending nailed down a few times throughout, it ended up being a shocking and well put together revelation.
Definitely a quick thriller worth a read!

OK, so the story was about a woman who was too dumb to see what we all saw coming a mile away. The story was OK. Kind of predictable. It did grip me I’d say mid way but it was annoying as hell.
This woman Eden was a little bit of a jackass. If this was an 80s horror movie, this dummy would be rolling her ankles every three steps. I don’t know what Olivia was even thinking. It all seemed really convoluted, but she was desperate I guess . The whole thing with Olivia was really convoluted, but I guess you have to find the drama where you can because writing a book is hard I guess. Ava, Eden’s daughter was was acting out in a very cliché fashion. And the husband, Dave, a sweet guy from the description but the guy sexually repressed his own damn self. How do you do that??
Eden was a goof, like the greenest white woman you’d ever met. I kinda got the vibe that if she saw someone who didn’t look like they belonged in her neighborhood, she’d immediately call 911 and believes almost every post on Facebook. She’s the Facebook aunt.
The Justin guy was a sociopath, but even after she was put into the basement by Justin and later, found out that Justin killed a friend of theirs then Justin beat her daughter and she saw and realized Justin victimized his wife for YEARS Somehow all of the blame had been on Olivia. She was a nut, BUT THERE WERE EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES, AND IT WASN’T ALL HER FAULT. There was almost no understanding at all. This whole family was a family of doofuses. I had to put down the book a few times because I end up rolling my eyes and throwing my hands up and going “girl what the hell are you doing“
Eden is an idiot read at your own risk. OK that was dramatic. It was a halfway decent read.

Her life is falling apart, but maybe an old flame can help her spark her life up… or send it all down in flames.
— SPOILERS AT THE END! Don’t read if you like being surprised. If you have triggers, take care of yourself. —
Who can you trust online? My takeaway from reading this is no one. Sometimes, we can’t even trust ourselves.
A Friend in The Dark is a gripping, nail-biting thriller, with surprising twists and turns.
I loved the surprise dual pov, and the writing style was very immersive and engaging. I love when thrillers make me feel like I’m investigating, trying to find the truth among the lies.
The ending is where the story lost me. The final twist, although unexpected, wasn’t as impactful as I was hoping. After so much tension built up, i expected a bigger explosion, a bigger fallout, more of a bang.
This was still an interesting read, and I look forward to reading more of this author’s works.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
CWs (spoilers):
- Catfishing
- Stalking, kidnapping
- Death and violence
- Domestic violence, domestic abuse
- No sex scenes (or closed doors)

I wasn't sure if I was gonna finish this book because half of the book is first person POV. But I'm glad I didn't DNF because I really enjoyed this book! I couldn't decide if I really liked Eden or not. She seemed to be a dedicated wife and mother but something about her was just so off to me. Eden is in the middle of her mid life crisis- her daughter kinda-sorta hates her, her husband wants to divorce her, and she has nobody to lean on. She thinks that she is the problem with her life; but on the night of her birthday she gets back in touch with her crush from college. Or does she? (LOL) Eden develops a relationship with this person- but this relationship just further messes up things in her life. Her (ex)husband is shocked, her daughter really can't stand her, and her friends are shocked at her decisions, she even faces reprimand at work because of this relationship. Things get even worse when when her daughter goes missing.
There were things that didn't align cohesively (for me at least).. Like, why does Ava know who her mom is talking to? They already had a tumultuous relationship before Ava going to college but there was nothing that made me think that Ava didn't like her mom because of the divorce. The divorce just seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back for Ava. But towards the end it's portrayed as if Ava just doesn't like her mother solely because she has her new BF.
Also, using a voice changer while talking on the phone just doesn't sound realistic to me! But I can suspend belief for the story.
Overall I liked this book- I figured out who was the real person Eden was texting- but I liked that we were led to believe that she was really talking to her college crush. Tyler seemed like a great guy RIP.
It was one of the better kindle books I've read so far. A quick read that kept me engaged.

I couldn’t tell if I loved or hated this book? The relationship was so manipulative and gaslight-y that it made me sick but also the twists were good and I couldn’t stop reading. Settled at 3 stars
