3.5 stars. Grisham has been pretty hit and miss for me lately, but this one was more hit. I listened on my commute and the story was engaging enough. The innocent black man behind bars in the south is beginning to become trite, unfortunately. It’s what we’ve come to expect rather than an anomalous miscarriage of justice.

Quick notes. I LOVED, LOVED THE GUARDIANS! I am an avid John Grisham fan and this is the author at his FINEST! A legal thriller/historical fiction classic. This is one for the home library. Top Books of 2019! If I could give it 10 stars I would. Here you go:

I love mysteries and the show Law and Order, so I assumed I would love lawyery books, especially with such high ratings! I liked the plot, with the main character being a preacher/lawyer practically taking an oath of poverty to get innocent people out of prison. The book just didn't hold me like mysteries do. I wasn't hooked. Obviously, I was hoping for the best for the characters, but it didn't feel urgent to keep reading. I guess it felt like what the appeals process sounds like: drawn out, there's a lot to keep track of, and it was easy to forget about if you aren't interested or participating.

Typical Grisham. Compelling characters & plot, more detail than you need and sometimes easy to get lost with so many characters, but a good tale.

I would have rated higher if not for abrupt ending. All-in-all a fairly tedious read, not Grisham at his best.

It's been a while since I've read a Grisham novel and this one reminded me why I enjoy them. It did not disappoint a bit. He does a remarkable job of finding the right combination of suspense, humanity, and legal details. You get to know the characters and end up caring about them. Unlike some authors, his side stories don't just exist to distract; they are always relevant and never ignored.
Good read!
