I did not finish this book - I got about a fifth of the way through the book and could not understand what was happening.

Oh for pity's sake. What an unfortunate choice. Hailed as a gripping debut, a powerful read, talented prose with an Edith Wharton like feel. Unfortunately, no. For me, this novel was none of those things. Prose for prose's sake-impressive from an ability to write long, descriptive passages, however, falls short of conjuring a story, characters or social commentary the reader cares about.

Couldn't really get into the characters or the story so I put it down after a few chapters.

Was hating this most of the way through, but it did pick up a little for the last 100 pages or so. Mostly it is so boring and SO overwritten. This could have been a novella or possibly even a short story. 2 1/2.

I didn't care too much for the writing style of this book - and I couldnt get too into this book until the last 50ish pages of the book, but once it was finished, I was a bit sad it was done. I just wish it would have been easier to get interested in.

This book includes the best insult I've ever read: "The music is that of a train hitting a merry-go-round. It sounds like the very incarnation of atrocity... The discordant principals' duet is like the nocturnal emission of a cancerous horse tethered in its dolorous slumber to a barbed aluminum fence during an electrical storm."

While the writing wasn't bad, it wasn't my style, thus I wasn't a fan of Sophie McManus's "The Unfortunates." I was looking forward to reading this one since I enjoy a well-thought-out novel about the 1%, but I couldn't stand most of the characters and didn't care what happened to any of them. I wish I could say something more positive, but this book just wasn't for me.

"Social satire" is how I think it was described. These "unfortunate" people. The richest of the rich who have lost touch with the world. Kind of hard to feel sorry for them. Except for Iris.

Family dysfunction is my thing but here, the writing is a bit too puffed up for me. I feel like the author is trying too hard to be clever. Cece is super snobby and I don’t like her son George at all. Hard to engage with these characters.

Fell apart a bit at the end, which was very disappointing, but I enjoyed it until that point!
