Wool was so well crafted from the character development to the slow reveal and one of my favorite first chapters ever. This was not that.

What’s up with the sand suits? Is this like The Force? No explanation.

How do the people in this dystopian dust bowl know what a keyboard is but the don’t know Danvar is Denver? Why would Denver be buried deeper than Pueblo and Colorado Springs? Makes no sense.

Most egregiously why is sex work so vilified? Hey Ryder, if your dad is such a big shot why does he spend all his money at the Honey Hole? (Really, the Honey Hole?)

This didn’t really hold my interest and I’m not even sure what was going on half the time.

Any interesting concept, but I struggle with the use of atomic weapons and what would be the fallout of its use? Especially in a distance so small from the "town points" but I do enjoy the feel of the madmax/waterworld/earth bending vibes.

This also feels like a YA novel, and some of the concepts reflect that but there are several points that are very dark and feel a little overly detailed.. but maybe that's just my sensitivity to the subjects.

I wish there are more explanation on the sand bending powers thing, because it feels like its not just a tech thing, but a power?

CW: Mentions of sexual assault, rape, graphic details of death or harm.

This was a solid meh for me. The world just isn't believable and the characters aren't that deep.

I am obsessed with the Wool series so was amped to read another by Hugh Howey. These books were entertaining but a little lacking for me. I know there's another book coming out soon and hope it may change my view of the series. Still a huge Howey fan forever.

On the recommendation of a favorite author of mine (Andy Weir), I reached back to 2014 to read the book Sand, in preparation for its sequel that released on October 4 of this year (fittingly named Across the Sand).

Sand is a world that we uncover and discover, mostly by inference, as the characters dive and live inside of raging sand dunes and desert. It’s clear this is a future place, where skyscrapers lay buried a mile deep, buildings filled with old treasures like coins, metal cases, paper. Nothing like that is easily found on the surface. It is a hard, scrounging life, constantly fighting the ever creeping and never ending sand.

Palmer, Conner, Rob and Victoria have found that there is no one to help them, no one to look out for them, but them. In a world where nothing is easy, they will find their own paths to survive. And perhaps, a way to save others along the way.

I have a million unanswered questions and will hope for answers in the new book by H. Howey. Suffice to say, this world he created is fascinating and heartbreaking and I was immediately taken in, losing my breath when they did, feeling the weight of life as heavy as a million sand dunes.

Liked the premise of the world being built, but each story kind of felt like a vignette to a larger world that I'll never see. Will likely revisit this down the line.
