3 and a half.

I liked this one much more than the first in this series. I like that the main character is not always the winner, that technology is used against him and he gets caught. He is not indestructibly powerful though he is very smart. I am interested to see how Silva continues to develop this character.

I'm not sure if I want to meet Gabriel Allon or not. The hero of the series is on the one hand cold and ruthless (after all, he is a trained killer) and on the other feels great remorse when he has to kill. In this book, Gabriel is called to Zurich by London art dealer Julian Isherwood, to restore a painting owned by Swiss banker Augustus Rolfe. However, when Gabriel arrives at the home in Zurich, he finds Rolfe dead. He gets out of there as quickly as possible but not quickly enough to be caught be the Swiss Intelligence Service. Gabriel soon realises this killing is part of something much much bigger - as Rolfe appears to have an art collection that came to him somewhat dubiously during WWII. Gabriel travels to Portugal to meet with Rolfe's daughter, world renowned violinist Anna Rolfe. Soon they realise that they have become targets - it seems that the Swiss banking world will stop at nothing to prevent the truth from being uncovered.

3.5 stars. This series is well written and enjoyable with characters that have stories I want to know more about, but it isn't especially memorable, which is why I'm scoring it as an average book.

This story, involving treasures stolen by the Nazis, had that extra bit of intrigue, but the fact that it has a scene in Paris was hard to read right now.

I enjoy the series and plan to continue reading it, but it isn't must read level in my opinion.

Gabrie allon is an assassin that moonlights as an art restorer, which is his true passion. He is commissioned for a restoration of a piece of artwork under strange and mysterious circumstances. When he arrives at the location of his next restoration assignment, he encounters something he had not been expecting. He is then drawn into the world of conspiracy and secrecy that had his life threatened and nearly taken. As always, I enjoy the intrigue and the action of these types of books. Gabriel Allon is an assassin with a heart, who is really adversely affected by the king. Nonetheless, he is a pro at what he does as an art restorer and an assassin. There weren't things that I disliked about this book per se, but the title did suggest that the English assassin would have been a bit more instrumental than I felt he was in this novel. I give this book a solid 3-star rating and look forward to the next installment of this series.

4.5 rounded up to 5. This was a lot of fun. Gabriel Allon is fast becoming one of my favorite characters. I love the plot, the pacing how Silva weaves in history, art, music and more into it all. These are a treat to read.
