Great book full of really cool and terrifying facts backed by a plethora of research and graphs are apparently abundant but I listened to an audiobook and will be purchasing this as a physical book so I can read the graphs and tab sections. Great book. Cool author.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is an excellent summary on (as the title clearly states) why we sleep. I don't know why I thought that what I learned in college (from my egregiously egotistic Sleep and Dreaming professor) would still be accurate and relevant but somehow I did. This book set me straight! The author presents the latest research in a readable and entertaining manner. He highlights the benefits of sleep in such detail (and the risks of too little shut eye) that I have actually been a bit panicked at times when I find myself shorted. The public health (and mental health) crises of chronic sleep deprivation (rampant in our society) are also addressed, as well as terrific ideas for moving towards solutions.

The chapters on dreams were fascinating and filled with information only possible from the latest technology. Sometimes it bordered on creepy (such as how researchers can tell WHAT you are dreaming about just by watching your brain on an MRI!!), but mostly it enhanced my understanding dramatically.

The only chapter in which i learned nothing new was the chapter on treating insomnia (which is good news, since I teach these strategies daily to my clients). Whew!!

I highly recommend this book to college students, working folks, parents, aging adults...ok, well fine, let's just say everyone.

not sure author understands evolutionary theory, but very informative nonetheless

Put me to sleep

This was SO fascinating, especially as someone who’s had sleep issues all her life. Now I understand why I feel so terrible when I’m sleep deprived (like, this week.) If we could all prioritize sleep more we’d live in a much better world. In my opinion—and Matthew Walker PhD’s.

Also the audiobook is read by an Englishman, so it’s delightful.
