I'm not one for reading books and feeling like my life changed dramatically in some way, that being said, this book definitely made me think twice about so many things regarding my own sleep hygiene. The author obliterated any preconceived notions I thought were true and replaced them with interesting factual information for me to go forth and conquer my sleep habits.

Each chapter builds up your understanding of sleep and how as homosapiens we have systematically, slowly and surely been deconstructing our overall sleep health. Matthew does this in a way that does not bash the reader but rather helps them understand the epidemic that is sleep and how you can rectify it. Each chapter if full to the brim of studies, research, all of which are condensed down into the key information you need and relative to the flow of the book, truly incredible as this could of been such a bigger book.

I seriously enncourage anyone who is curious about the magical drug that is sleep, or looking for an amazing read, to pick this up as you won't be disappointed.

Nothing like reading about the importance of sleep while nursing at 3 am.

Quite persuasive. Huge eye-opener to the importance of sleep in so many ways.

Also very practical. Actionable insights that have already helped me make positive changes in my life.

Writing style is a little flamboyantly academic. And perspective is quite polemic, which, on occasion, undermines the points being made. Often places a lot of weight in correlation. I find myself convinced of the author's overarching theses, but I'd look for more data and a less polemic communicator for some of the more speculative assertions.

I was always very curious about sleep and dreams, and I finally found a book that answered many of my questions. It is not only a great book about the latest science behind these mysterious phenomenon, but it is also an unintended self-help book that can actually change your sleep habits by convincing you of its importance, both in terms of physical and mental health. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who is trading sleep for something else.

Pretty good and insightful overall, however, I agree with some of the reviews. Some of the information presented came across a bit like a scare tactic. I'd recommend taking the information in with a pinch of salt.

I started reading this book I think during the pandemic. my original copy was either destroyed or discarded during a break up and now I’m finally finishing it three years later with a new copy I bought from skylight books. if you need to fix your sleep schedule, read this book! I already had hit a breaking point years ago during grad school when I decided sleep would be my new number one, but this book will give you every reason as to why that’s a good decision. and it will also give you every reason why lack of sleep will literally kill you. (nonfiction/horror??) I like this book because it’s written by an actual sleep scientist and it is chock-full of studies. it can be dense at times but I like getting the nitty gritty details so I didn’t mind. all I can say now is america needs to SLEEP, god damn
