I love the world in this book. The way Nina introduces you to it is perfect. The characters back stories are well thought out. However, we feel like the two protagonist lacked in charisma. They're loveable, sure. I felt as if Crier lacked in certain areas. I wanted her to be my favourite character but she just didn't have the passion I needed.
Ayla in my opinion was written better. I understand where she's coming from with her back story, but with no lead from Crier, the love angle is a soft burn. I get this was meant to be 'enemies to lovers' but it just wasn't. The enemies is also a bit misleading, one didn't even know they were enemies.
It's a good book overall. I really did enjoy it, and I will read Iron Heart. It just needed more to hit that extra star.

Varela has a wonderful touch with details of the world that make it feel very vibrant and lived-in. Crier is adorable and Ayla is a very functional trainwreck and I love them.
The end gets a little unfocused, as 2 characters investigate the same mystery and the reader doesn't gain any additional insight, but it was a fast read and I'm looking forward to book 2!

Great world building. Interesting premise to be in love with your main oppressor. Can’t say I blamed Ayla for her feelings. Complex emotional layers.
