3.5/4⭐️✨
This was an adequately done witchy book! Although it was slightly slow to start, and there was far too much winking from Grey, it seemed intriguing enough to keep me reading.
It was almost a rendition of a witchcraft hunger games, on a much smaller, less murdery scale. The trials kept you on edge and made you read on whilst the “evil” King kept you wondering whether or not he was truly as evil as the covens made him out to be.
However, the plot moved too fast sometimes. It felt like there either hadn’t been a lot of build up, or, time to come to terms with something that happened. It was straight onto the next which felt overwhelming and hard to keep up. I also wasn’t that invested in the love story due to this.
Overall, an ok read!

This was so hard for me to rate. I definitely enjoyed reading this book, but it kinda has the same levity as The Vampire Diaries. I feel like I read a fun (and at times cheesy) tv show.
I am absolutely fucking broken that Raven caused Kirsi to be stuck as a wraith. That’s so devastating.
Also, Raven is a little all over the place. She’s supposed to be fiery, passionate, and ready to do whatever it takes to fulfill her promise to her Grandmother, but she makes so many questionable decisions too early on. One notable moment occurred when she almost died in a trial, and Kirsi was to go next. She states that she hopes she makes it out alive, then is taken back to her room. She immediately starts corresponding with the ‘as far as she knows evil ‘ king. She basically bantered and flirted with him, when I would have expected a more somber approach considering her BFF is fighting for her life.
I’m also hoping the vitriol Onyx and Willow harbor for Raven is explained a bit more in the next book.
This book desperately needs an editor/new editor. There were duplicated words, words left out, so many commas missing, and Onyx’s hair changes from jet black in the third chapter, to chestnut in the ~13th chapter. I have so many notes editing the book myself as I went along.
Although this book didn’t change my life, it was still a good fall read and I will continue the series. The acknowledgements were especially heartwarming.
