Excellent and imspiring, but the lesser when compared to the Aeneid. It's hard for me to praise parts of this epic poem, without finding myself comparing it to the Aeneid.

Read and studied for Classical Civilisation A-level.

Truly a wonderful story. It was a privilege to be taught this piece of literature. It has only furthered my comprehension of novels throughout my life after reading it. Book 16 tore my heart out and I still haven't recovered (I was 17 when I read this).

The narrative was astoundingly addictive and moved at a rapid pace. It's very difficult to say something original about arguably the first piece of western literature but from its first few lines of action in media res to the last whisper of conversation about Hector's body, the epic encapsulates everything that became so significant about western epic literature.

All in all, a joy of an epic to explore.

Such were the funeral rights of horse taming Hector...

The Iliad was much more readable than I had imagined, however, the story really bogs down in places. There are long sections of roll calls of the various leaders and there troops ("Anyone here from Cleveland?!), and a 40 page recounting of a sort of mini-olympics that takes place as part of a funeral.

Read It for school. Literally fell asleep reading it. Not my cup of tea at all.
