So glad that I slogged my way through this, it's a beautifully-written book and the prose was so refreshing. I had never heard of this before, but a friend recommended it and I was so glad I found it.
I will say this: most of the time, stories about average (or below-average, in Quoyle's case) men are a dime a dozen. This one feels different on a couple of levels, but mostly it's the clipped, sing-song prose language that makes you keep reading. You love the protagonist and his family, but you also feel a tiny bit of pleasure when he screws up at stuff. Just cuz.

The story and characters really grew on me. I did not like all the incomplete sentences or writing style in particular, but it mattered less as the stories went on. I
Great atmosphere and really enjoyed reading a book that felt like such a different time and place. Now I want to get a boat and go to Newfoundland. Good-weird.

My favorite author is Steinbeck so it felt inevitable that I'd enjoy this. Lovely prose, small in scope, and a singular focus on working-class characters and their lives in a coastal town? This was Newfie Cannery Row and I'm all for it.
I still loved this one as much as I did when I read it 20 years ago. It's nice when things hold up.

A wonderful quiet book!
Beautifully written, colorful characters and a relaxing kind of melancholy.
Coastal Newfoundland, the ocean and the weather we're all characters
