Really glad I picked this up! This book made me feel seen and was a really kind approach to giving dating and relationship advice. A lot of modern dating advice doesn’t resonate with me and makes me feel ashamed of my anxiety, so this was really refreshing. I didn’t mind the hyper-conversational, peppy tone of the book because I am a huge fan of Allison/the JBU podcast, but I can understand why other people wouldn’t like that.

This is more of a me problem, but I think this book was more geared towards folks in new relationships than it was towards chronically single girlies like me. It gave me lots to think about, and I can see myself returning to this book when I do enter my next relationship. The chapter about dating productively was unfortunately a let down—it didn’t teach me anything I didn’t already know from experience and was filled with cliché modern dating advice I hear all the time. Lots of helpful info for dating newbies, but not so much for those of us who have been around the block a few times.

I picked this book up on a whim and I'm glad I did so! It was so refreshing to read a self-help book that disregarded romantic and platonic love in search for self-love. THAT SAID, I appreciated her take that self- love is EXTREMELY important and necessary, but you aren't a bad person for wanting to not be completely alone. I also appreciated the anecdotal stories interweaving advice from experts on the topic. If you struggle with mental health and are looking to be/are currently in a relationship I recommend reading this book.

I think this book struggles with being both too clinical and personal at the same time. The author talks to professionals and uses their advice in the book, but then injects her own voice. The tone goes from stiff to very conversational very quickly, giving the reader whiplash. It feels like it's unclear what this book was meant to be: a self-help guide or a memoir by the author. The author has an interesting story but the way we learned it was in between interviews with doctors. I really would've liked a clearer focus and consistent voice here.

On the plus side, I think there's advice in here anyone can use when it comes to dating.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who is perpetually anxious and single I got a lot of great inspiration from reading this book. The research and insight from mental health professionals really legitimatised the concepts Allison explored and the anecdotes felt real, funny and honest.

Obviously the mental health landscape is huge and the industry is ripe with inequality. I am glad this privilege was acknowledged throughout the book although I do think some of the interviews could have been more focused on inclusivity and contain diverse voices.

The chapters in which Allison gets the most vulnerable were the most compelling to me. Relationship stuff - sex, dating, break ups - is tough but I do feel more capable to go on the dating journey thanks to this book.

I received an ARC from NetGalley.

Good book - i don’t really like how conversational it is but it’s a good book for people with anxiety and people dating someone with mental illness. The book also lists insights from each chapter at the end which is helpful .

I wish more of the book was like the section on sex, which was vulnerable and insightful, and comparably light on the weird comedic asides, which I really didn’t enjoy.
