Ms. Pratt has quite an imagination. And a sense of humor peeks through enough to leaven the dark plot. This was a Kindle freebie; I don't know that I would have bought the book--or others in the series because it's not really my genre--but I'm glad I read this one.

Meh... A nice, quick read, a Twinkie of a book, not much real nourishment. However, I did get a huge kick out of the San Francisco locales described in the book -- they talked about places right next to where I work and places right next to where I live!! So, that was fun.

This book is gritty, exciting, and intriguing all at once. Marla is a tough, no nonsense heroine that is trying to save herself from a curse. Her quest leads her to San Francisco, which is a bit too clean, except for the dead bodies strewn along her path. There, Marla meets sorcerers of different types, a snake god, and a crazy man in underwear in a cape. Learning about the different types of sorcerers is very interesting, and the snake god gives too-tough Marla a taste of her own medicine, which is refreshing. The entire book is full of nonstop action and twists and turns. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Fans of urban fantasy should love this!

Fun
I enjoyed this one. The action kept you engaged and the characters made you care. I would recommend it to fans of paranormal or urban fantasy books.

This was a genuinely weird read because it feels like a book from the middle of a series, constantly referencing events from earlier books.
Solid enough probably try the second at some point but unless I feel like it levels up in there I’m probably done with the series.

I initially bought this, read a few pages, and took it back because I couldn't sympathize with the main character. After reading reviews of this book and the next two in the series, I decided I should give it another try. My initial impression was wrong--this is an admittedly blunt-weapon of a female character, but she is far from being an unsympathetic one. When you understand what motivates her, you can't help but get swept up in her story.

It took a really long time to get going, but I liked the battle and resolution. I'll be reading the next one when I can get my hands on it.

I didn't care for this one I'm afraid. I was in the mood for some magic- I'm a big fan of the Hollows series by Kim Harrison and the blurb makes this sound similar- but I got halfway through this book and had experienced precisely no magic, and hadn't been gripped by the characters or plot, so I stopped.
I'm not going to criticize the story other than that because I didn't finish it, so I have no right to review the book as a whole. It could have had the ending of all endings for all I know.
This makes only the second book this year I haven't been willing to finish. I normally persevere (like the stubborn mule I am), but it just wasn't for me. Sorry.

This was a really good book in a variety of ways.
Some points that I was particularly fond of:
1. Characters with alternate sexuality whose tendencies were not made into a huge deal.
2. Self-interested character remains motivated by self interest instead of becoming a "jerk with a heart of gold."
3. Characters refer to early events and adventures without a huge narrative digression to tell about the details.
I will definitely be checking out more Marla Mason books in the future.
