This had been on my “want to read” list for a while.

I really enjoyed where the line of reality and fiction began to blur. I agree with some of the other reviewers that all the characters seem to be really detestable.

Some of the bodily descriptions were a bit too much for me.

This was such a strong five star read for me! The writing was gripping and fast paced. It takes the classic ghost/haunting story and turns it for an awesome twist.
The body horror and grief horror intertwine for a deliciously dark journey.
It was both horrifying and thought provoking. I especially loved the elements of mycology that add that extra little layer to the entire thing. This one became a new favorite!

This book is so, so, so comically bad. I almost stopped reading it, but I’m not a quitter and I kept thinking it would get better. It never got better.

I am a huge postmodernist fan and it was my focus in my MA program, but this is too much. It’s trying too hard to be a postmodernist work.

The author uses words that don’t fit (just to use “big” words) and repetition that ends up being redundant. There would also be postmodern authors name dropped everywhere, trying to be tongue in cheek or allude to their works, but it was just awkward and ill-fitting. Then, I went to look for other reviews on here and the author put a 5 star review on here of his own book…which is just gross.

There are some parts that give an interesting take on addiction, but it’s not enough to save the book.

I am in love with this cover! As soon as I got it I was so excited to read it. The synopsis along with the cover give you high expectations. Sadly, the book didn’t live up to them. I want to first say, if you find the synopsis interesting then please give this book a try! Just because I didn’t love it doesn’t mean you won’t. I think my main issue with this story was the writing. I don’t know if it’s the style or just the way it was written but I couldn’t get past it which led me to DNF. There was no flow and the pacing was all over the place. Some things were super interesting and others left me super bored. I also didn’t care for the characters and the decisions they were making. Ultimately, this one wasn’t for me but I do think others will enjoy it.

Thank you so much @quirkbooks for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am updating this rating to 5 ⭐️s because it’s been almost two years and I think about this book all the time.

I have terrible taste in men too, Erin. This was honestly kind of brutal. I have seen addiction in close friends and family and I thought the author did a really good job of portraying what it’s like while also maintaining the horror aspect. The audiobook was so well done, I barely stopped listening to sleep last night, and the end was exactly what I saw coming but in the best way. 3.5/5

DID NOT FINISH: 69%

None of the characters were likeable, not even in a love to hate them way. They were just terrible, idiotic people. He seemed to be trying to make several different points (around grief, death, addiction ect) without actually fully forming any of them. I had to give up even skim reading it because I was so bored and fed up. Also way too much vomit.

4.5/5 stars.

I love the Southern Gothic horror atmosphere is what I've learned. There is very little technical horror elements on page until midway through the book but the time spent building the characters and their relationships pays off. The characters are flawed and are unreliable narrators at best and we go through this story and things like time passing becomes blurry and what's real and what's hallucination is frequently becomes jumbled.
