I initially gave 4 stars but had to remove one. I can’t get over how strong of a concept it was just for poor execution and inexcusable ending. It 100% left me feeling like this book didn’t have enough honest feedback before going to the publisher, and potentially like the author lost interest in writing this book. The ending doesn’t even make sense. I hope it’s revisited in the future and updated to meet the potential it has.

This was a heavy, heavy read. I knew it would be which is why I put it off so long. I’m glad I finally went for it though.
This is a psychological horror with a paranormal twist. A very smart book in general. I’m someone who has addicts (recovered) in my life so this book hit me super hard. But I’m just so impressed with how intelligent it was. You get all parts of addiction covered in this book. You get the experience of the addict, of their loved ones, of the healing, of the rock bottom. You get it all. And it’s done soooooo well.
Not to mention some of the imagery in here was sooo nightmare inducing. Like some really creepy images that won’t be leaving my mind anytime soon. Also mushroom horror! I absolutely love it.
I really related to this and I could relate to all of the emotions the MC felt. It’s not at all black and white and this book shows that.
Parts of the end kinda lost me, but not so much so that it ruined the book for me. Will definitely read more of this author!
Check your triggers, the addiction content really is heavy and dark.

Hands down, LOVED this book! It had strong emotion, even stronger detail, and truly paints the picture in your mind of you being right there alongside Erin and the others. I will admit, I have a weak stomach and gagged a handful of times reading it. I also nearly cried at other points.
Ghost Eaters really digs into showing struggles with addiction and grief. Another big thing that stood out to me is the MC’s ongoing battle with not setting boundaries (and self shame when she does).
The reason I gave it 4 stars is because the first part is quite slow, in my opinion. It REALLY picks up the pace later on so I’m glad I kept going! However, it was a bit of a struggle to push through. It also seemed as if I was reading 2 different books by the time I got to the second half. The writing style takes a quick turn BUT I’m absolutely living for that second style!

Ghost Eaters deals with grief and loss, addiction and the ghosts we carry with us.
Mushrooms, polyethylene, bodies and ghosts will never look the same to me after this. I loved everything in this book and it broke my heart over and over. Clay is for sure one of my favorite authors now. That ending was so heart wrenching and honestly the whole story was a gut punch.
The whole time we're left questioning if the main character is dealing with the effects of the drugs she's taking or if she's truly being haunted.
Here's some quotes that I want to share:
"What is a ghost? Is it a shadow of our past clinging to our present? I believe it's our addictions. The habits we form that end up consuming us if we allow them to take over."
"Once it's gone, our only hope for the afterlife is that our memories remain in the hearts of those still living. Those are the vessels we inhabit. I don't know if you can find comfort in that, but that's all I hold on to."
"We need to find a better way to live with our ghosts. Ignoring them gets you nowhere. After I cleaned myself up, I realized the best way - the only way, really - to keep living is to acknowledge the past. I have to try, at least. It's the only way to co-exist now.
So I look. I acknowledge their pain the only way I can: I let them know they are seen. That they are not forgotten. I don't turn away anymore. I look at them head-on. In their eyes.
Ghost won't let us look away anymore. We have to learn to live with them. Our dead."

Honestly, I just don’t know what to think of this book. It was crazy, and yet so realistic in the addiction part. It made sense in a sad disturbing way. Also the scene where it’s her first day of work was HILARIOUS, I was laughing my butt off. But then after that it was really depressing but still had me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen. This book did everything it set out to do. I just wish we got an authors note to understand what made the author write this story. I gave it a star off because there was something missing, but overall it was still a phenomenal read. Highly recommend if you want to get into horror but don’t know where to start. The gory descriptions was sooooo disgusting accurate that I was pretty nauseous by the end of the book. It was fire thooooo!!!!!
Grief horror is so compelling because grief can take us outside ourselves, take us to the darkest of places. Chapman takes grief horror in a tragic new direction when he introduces us to Erin, devastated by the death of her charismatic friend Silas.
In her despair, Erin’s starts taking “ghost” a shroom that allows her to see the dead. And Gadzooks, Erin takes us to dark places.
Ghost Eaters is heart wrenching tale of grief and addiction. Chapman perfectly and crushingly captures the destruction, paranoia and betrayal of drug use. The revenants were so scary and disturbing, so wonderfully disgusting, they were as terrifying as zombies.
This book is surprising, with unexpected twists and a distressingly relatable MC in Erin.
A smart SMART horror novel that grips you and breaks you. I loved it.
