I don't know... Maybe 2.5 stars rounding up, maybe 3.5 stars rounding down. This isn't a horror story, really. This is a story about drug addiction and manipulation and the wake left behind by them. There were some parts that got a little creepy, but this really wasn't a ghost story or anything about ghosts or anything about ghost stories.
I feel like the writing style was forced to be quirky, sometimes it worked but often it didn't. Plus, it gets oddly preachy at times about the importance of living and moving on from addiction and whatnot, which sure, that's important, but that's not what I'm here for.

2.75 stars for the exploration of substance abuse disorder & for being creepy/gross

CW: Addiction including ODs, Racist town, grotesque, death & grief

I honestly almost DNFed this book twice but I saw so many good reviews & I wanted to see what happened .
But what happened is a lack of character & relationship development. Plus weird ( not in a good way) all over the place storylines.

I'd you think mushrooms in general are creepy af and couldn't get enough of Mexican Gothic, not culturally related, but definitely in the same fungi family.

Dnf'd :/ Just not a fan of the characters.
concept was cool but it took way too long to get exciting so much so that I gave up, not a fan of destructive characters that don't do anything to be better...

2.5 Ghost Eaters is a pretty solid haunted addiction novel. There’s a ghost pill you can take to talk to the dead but it makes you start seeing ghosts everywhere. I think the idea is explored in an interesting way, it almost feels like an addiction recovery book which is probably its biggest strength. But it has two core problems that it can’t overcome. There’s a good idea, but the book’s not great.

The first issue is that the novel only really has one character, and she’s a spoiled marketing undergrad in Richmond, VA. She’s in love with a romantic junkie loser who coasts through life on his looks, when he inevitably overdoses, she wants to take the ghost pill to talk to him. The idea is fine, but I hated her. I hated Silas, I don’t even know who the f-k Tobias is. There are no other characters. They’re less than cliche’s, they are cardboard cutouts. Why would you hang out with these people? IN FAIRNESS, I live in northern VA and studied communications. The amount of people I knew who pretty much did this exact thing (ghosts optional) is a lot higher than I’d like.

The second issue, the back half of the book is a mess. Why would anyone want this? Once she becomes a ghost pill addict, she resorts to a lot of junkie behavior. But there’s no real threat! It’s not scary to just describe a ghost standing there. It’s not doing anything! Her love is self-destructive. Silas is a two-dimensional creep, it’s just something to die for. Good addiction book, pretty wimpy horror novel. Is this a paranormal romance too? Why does this keep happening?

This book is not getting the praise it deserves in these reviews.
The idea that death is a sea of ash, that it’s a bleak misery awaiting every single one of us is haunting me (pun intended).
The imagery the author painted with his words was vivid and surreal. I easily lost myself in this book and was regretful to reach the end, still wanting to know more.
If the intention of the author was to leave us feeling not only spooked & paranoid, but also completely disturbed and deeply uneasy, then mission accomplished.
I could not put this down, especially as it reached the climax.
