While I didn't like this as much as Local Woman Missing, I'm so glad I finally enjoyed another Mary Kubica book after several misses. I'm now looking extra forward to her new release! While I did find this book pretty predictable after a certain point, I enjoyed the journey and the storytelling. Quinn and Alex were distinctive voices to read from, and I appreciate that in a thriller, a genre which can seem generic sometimes. Especially character wise. This book had a unique, off kilter feel I appreciated (kind of reminded me how I felt reading When the Lights Go Out, before that awful ending). Overall this was a fun ride.

This was weird and had the most disappointing ending. The plot twist wasn’t even worth the read. 😫

This book was a solid 3 stars for me for the first 3/4 of the book. The ending gave it another 1/2 star. I liked the alternating POVs between Quinn looking for Esther in Chicago and Alex trying to figure out the mystery woman he named Pearl, in Michigan. I’m sure the intention is for the reader to think “Pearl” is Esther, but after a few chapters that didn’t ring true to me. I couldn’t figure where the agoraphobic Ingrid fit in for the majority of the book and the psychologist was a n unnecessary character. The ending was solid and nicely brought everything together.

This book is a slow burn, I struggled to pay attention in the beginning and later caught myself occasionally skimming paragraphs that felt redundant. The last ~60 pages really made it worth the read but in my opinion the book could have been much shorter and still had the same impact.
