It was everything that I wanted it to be, except I wanted more.

I grew up hearing much about this book. I’m a big fan of Mignola’s art too. The story was an interesting take on a 19th century Batman. Nicely self contained and surprisingly upbeat considering it begins with Bruce and Jack the Ripper arriving in Gotham at the same time.
It would have been interesting to see more popular characters redesigned but Mignola is reserved here. Focusing more on Batman and on Bruce Wayne. The character art and gothic tone is definitely on display in a good way. Just feels like there was potential to do more here had the run continued beyond two issues. Worth reading though for fans of the Bat.

Suuuper intriguing premise, I mean, I love Batman, I love Victorian era stuff, so ya can’t go wrong! It was fine, the first issue about Jack the Ripper was better than the second about the fair. Now to watch the movie!

Jack the Ripper meets Batman. This premise was everything I could ever want in a comic book. Unfortunately, all things considered, it was also a little lackluster in execution. It’s actually 2 comics in 1, and GASLIGHT, was the shorter of the 2. I wanted more time with it, more pages, a better resolution.

This may be the first Elseworlds story, placing Bruce Wayne (and Batman) into the Victorian Era. The premise is that Jack the Ripper has moved from London to Gotham and now Batman must track him down, all while his daylight alter ego Bruce Wayne is one of the prime suspects for Jack's murders.

The concept is kind of classically cheesy - 'What If Batman fought Jack the Ripper?' isn't really too far from 'Who would win in a fight between Superman and Godzilla' but even so, the concept is intriguing and fun, and could make for a great story. Unfortunately, the story is really short and almost ham-handed. The art is amazing though, teaming up P. Craig Russel with Mike Mignola.

It's definitely worth a read - a must for any Batman fans and a maybe for those unfamiliar with Batman, too, because it's out of continuity it is more accessible. However it's also not likely to win anyone over to Batman either for the same reasons, and not likely to garner any new fans to comics in general just because it's nothing that spectacular.

Didn't finish; came for the original Gotham By Gaslight story which was great! Definitely do read that!!! However the rest of the stories included here just didn't do it for me - even though one seemed very directly inspired by the Chicago World's Fair, which I am generally quite interested in. Your mileage may vary.
